Is There Anything Impressive About VoIP?

January 11, 2016

I am getting peppered with email invites to lunch-and-learns, webinars and other events to learn about "impressive" companies. Is there anything impressive about VoIP? Is anyone doing anything really unique? I am having a hard time thinking so.

Unified Hope for UCaaS

December 16, 2015

End of year buzz around unified communications (UC, UCaaDS, Hostd PBX, Hosted UC) is ramping up. All part of the predictions and trend watching for 2016.

First, I have a shout out to my bud, Alex Doyle for this very nice video (commercial) for VZ UC&C. I have no idea if he is pitching the Cisco HCS platform or the Broadsoft VCE that he spent years sweating over.

UNIFY Gets Acquired

November 9, 2015

Two years ago, Siemens Enterprise Communications re-branded as UNIFY. "Unify, is a joint venture between the American private equity firm The Gores Group and German industrial conglomerate Siemens AG," according to Wikipedia. It is a premise-based comms platform. Now, Atos is buying Unify from Gores and Seimens.

3 Reasons Most VoIP Providers Will Fail

July 29, 2015

There are about 2000 Hosted VoIP providers in the US (if you include ILECs, CLECs, RLECs and cablecos). They can't all win in the business market for at least 3 reasons.

I talk about Integration all of the time. Why?

Is the PBX Dead?

June 9, 2015

"Global enterprise PBX revenue fell 6 percent in the first quarter of 2015 (1Q15) from a year ago, according to the IHSInfoneticsEnterprise Unified Communications and Voice Equipment report from IHS," according to IHS press.

Worldwide PBX revenue (TDM, hybrid and pure IP) totaled $1.6 billion in 1Q15. And PBX line shipments were up 3% in 1Q15 from 1Q14. Yet there is a headline of SMB: Is the PBX Dead?

Edgewater-Metaswitch UC Study

May 29, 2015

I was on the Edgewater webinar yesterday where John Macario was presenting the Edgewater Hosted PBX/UC study data. Edgewater surveyed 1250 businesses about PBX, HPBX and UC. The data was good.

Metaswitch's Chris Carabello also presented.

Getting Perspective

May 14, 2015

I am heading to the Genband Perspectives15 show next week in Orlando. Going to see about Kandy and Nuvia plus some details on the fring idea. (Not to poke BSFT, but at least this show has some cool stuff to take a look at.)

While all that tech is cool, with 2000+ providers offering VoIP in the US, Marketing should be paramount.

Where is the VoIP Market is Going?

May 11, 2015

I have been working on this post for a while. I even asked a couple of people in the industry where they thought the Hosted PBX market was going. A few said that integration was going to be important for customers to realize the full impact of Unified Communications. That is certainly true especially at mid-market and larger.

News Tidbits Part 2916

February 16, 2015

Some different things happening in the VoIP industry. Let's take a look.

Phonism has come out of beta with their VoIP end-point management system.

8x8 "announced it is offering an unprecedented Service Level Agreement (SLA) to qualified enterprise customers that guarantees the industry's highest levels of service availability and voice quality for calls transmitted over the public Internet.....

Softphone From a Handset Maker

February 9, 2015

The Telecom Reseller has a report that Grandstream released an Android app.

"Grandstream Networks has announced the launch of Grandstream Wave, a free softphone application for Android devices. Grandstream Wave allows business and residential users to make and receive SIP based voice calls over Wi-Fi using any Android mobile devices running Android 4.0 or higher. This free app can be downloaded from the Google Pay Store and supports the integration of up to six SIP accounts, six-way voice conferencing and a number of telephony features."

CLECs releasing apps - like Voxox - isn't unusual.
