What Did I Miss Part 34

September 4, 2014

Merger Details Emerge

In the mix of the Comcast-TWC merger will emerge a new MSO created by divestitures and swaps called GreatLand Connections, previously called SpinCo. Charter will own one-third and operate it, says Telecompetitor.

The FCC has received a lot of comments on this merger docket and many are anti-merger. I think it would be a mess for consumers - and the result would be a much larger Comcast that is too large already.

The Next Step in UCaaS

August 27, 2014

The numbers are in - Infonetics: PBX market down 6%, Unified Communications up 31% from year ago - Hosted PBX or UCaaS is growing. Well, sure, from zero to a couple of hundred million in ten years. Yet we come to a crossroads now. The premise people are shrinking but slowly.

3 VoIP Studies to Skim

August 18, 2014

I like the responses when you survey your Everyday Jack and Jill. In this Survey: What Do People Really Know About VoIP? 'It may seem that what the average consumer knows and doesn't know about VoIP isn't very relevant to the technology's business uses." Despite over 10 years of "marketing" VoIP, "nearly 71 percent of the people we surveyed couldn't define what VoIP was without contextual cues." Awesome!

What do consumers worry about? No dial-tone without power; call quality; and specialized equipment.

Cloud, Cloud, Cl...Shut Up!

July 31, 2014

Continuing from yesterday's Access is Still Pretty Good, Microsoft is trying to coach its partners on how to sell cloud services (like Office365) since it is different than how partners were selling Hosted Exchange and Small Business Server.

Microsoft's BAD TIP #1: Talk cloud, cloud, cloud with customers. It isn't about premise versus cloud. It is about Business Needs, Goals and desired outcomes.

Netflix is Insight into VoIP Quality

June 11, 2014

Netflix has an ISP rating to let consumers know how ISPs are doing delivering Netflix streaming video. Netflix is involved in a fight for the last mile with the largest ISPs in the US, especially Comcast and Verizon FiOS.

When your Netflix video buffers and buffers, some people call their ISP who has them do a speed test. Big deal.

One Way to Differentiate

June 3, 2014

My agent business (activity) has picked up considerably lately. Someone found me via my blog looking for a phone system that would integrate with ACT and Outlook. Doing some research, ShoreTel Sky and 3CX came up. Talking with a master agent I found out that Digium and Broadsmart do the integration as well.

A Look at ShoreTel Numbers

May 21, 2014

The WSJ posted revenue numbers from Shoretel. I am taking a guess that these would be industry average or demonstrate what all PBX vendors are seeing. ( could be wrong.)

"Recurring revenues, which consist of cloud monthly recurring revenues and support revenues, represented 40% of total revenue in the third quarter of fiscal 2014 and reached an annualized value of $130 million." So 30-35% of revenues are now coming from HPBX MRC.

What's Missing in UC?

May 1, 2014

Why do people think UC is plug and play! Was Microsoft ever plug and play?

The biggest hurdle to Hosted UC installs is a competent technician on-site. Heck, even for telecom installs, a competent tech would be helpful to extend the demarc, run some cat5e or fiber runs, deploy the CPE, turn up the router (and plug it in), check for UPS, etc.

The ITSP Polycom Problem

March 28, 2014

I was at the Dali Museum to see the Andy Warhol exhibit. Great piece of history, btw. The Dali rotates the art, so it was my first time seeing this painting called Telephone in a dish with three grilled sardines. It got me thinking of a couple of things.

How ShoreTel Broke M5

March 10, 2014

In February of 2012, PBX maker ShoreTel bought hosted PBX provider, M5 Networks. At the time, M5 had 2000 customers - just two thousand - with an ARPU of $2000. (That's $4 million per month in revenue, $48 mill per year.)

M5 was selling to big organizations like Ziff-Davis and Amnesty.
