Voxox Gets Original

March 4, 2014

Voxox's marketing maven, Tristan Barnum, has introduced original entertainment content as a way to get some attention for its partners and products. In a world of telecom where every booth at a show says the same thing, it's nice to see some creativity in the Hosted VoIP space.

"Voxox's first original entertainment content initiative is titled ROFL: A Rhinoceros and Octopus Find Love, which features weekly "high art" graphic-novel-type imagery as well as minimalist archetypal imagery throughout the week. A new episode is posted to Twitter each workday at noon.

Don't Be Lazy in VoIP Sales

January 15, 2014

Things must be tough over at RC, because I received an email from an RC account exec titled, "Looking for best contact". The copy was "I am doing some research on your company to determine if there is any interest in a cloud business phone system. Your business will benefit from more control, more features and 50-70% lower telecommunications costs." There's a few things wrong here.

One: spamming just pisses me off.

Lessons From Avaya EPF

December 3, 2013

Interesting Sales Tips from Avaya's Executive Partner Forum last month

"38% of salespeople understand the customer's issues and are able to identify how the vendor can help." Just 38%. That means two-thirds of salespeople are still selling the old way. Training and sales coaching is needed.

M&A This Week

IBM jumped into MDM (mobile device management) with its purchase of Fiberlink. "Fiberlink's MaaS360 cloud-based offerings, IBM will expand its bring your own device (BYOD) capabilities to deliver a complete mobile management and security solution through IBM MobileFirst that includes trusted transactions and security intelligence capabilities for mobile apps, users, content and data." [source] Fiberlink was the first MDM firm to support Google Glass.

8x8 is really branching out. First with Softbank in Japan in cloud and now buying a UK service provider.

More Than Just VoIP Now

August 26, 2013

The ITEXPO used to be the primary VoIP show. Today as we launch the pre-show, I notice that none of the press releases are about VoIP. Hardly any are even about UC (unified communications). There is a lot of noise around M2M.

CloudTC and N-Able Acquired

May 22, 2013

"Australian-owned IP PBX systems company, Vixtel, has completed the acquisition of Silicon Valley based glass phone developer, CloudTC, for an undisclosed figure," according to news reports. I really liked this phone when it came out. It was ahead of the curve. CloudTC was a Startup Camp Comms candidate.

There have been some interesting articles lately. I can't get to all of them, but here are some good reads.

Death of the Telecom VAR in 2013 - How an entire sub-industry will be wiped out in the next 24 months by Jeff Hawkes. "Traditional telecom VARs or value-added reseller businesses- those that derive the majority of their revenue from the sale of on-premise PBX equipment to business customers- have ridden one of the longest product life cycle waves in recent technological history and combined with an emerging threat from hosted phone providers and a professional background that leaves most ill-prepared to run a business larger than a few employees is threatening to wipe-out or dramatically alter an entire sub-industry in the next 24 months." He writes like me.

One Deal And One Bullhorn

UNSI has been in the news lately. It was originally American Broadband, reselling DSL nationally. Then it changed its name to United Network Services, Inc. and became a facilities-based carrier, with 18 Points of Presence (PoPs) and interconnections (and NNIs) to over 150 carriers in the US (including cable, DSL, wireless, CLEC and ILEC). "UNSi's partners are able to leverage the relationships with these carriers, paired with the cost savings and convenience of working with a single partner, under one invoice."

The VoIP Market Right Now

April 29, 2013

"The market for VoIP services has moved well beyond the early adopter stage to mainstream status in many developed countries. SIP trunking and hosted UC continue to heat things up, fueling growth," reports Diane Myers, principal analyst for VoIP, UC, and IMS at Infonetics Research.

According to the study, "Due to continued demand for enterprise cloud-based services, hosted VoIP and Unified Communications (UC) services revenue grew 17% in 2012 from 2011, the most of any segment."

The reality is that SIP Trunking jumped 83% because VoIP is a cheap dial-tone replacement.
