Telecom Tidbits (Part 2452)

April 11, 2017

Coming at you from the Channel show in Vegas, where TelePacific reveals its new brand as TPX Communications. Tele and Pacific didn't fit a managed services provider with a nationwide reach. TPX is more interested in selling UCaaS, managed IT, SD-WAN and managed security these days. The name change is to reflect that.

2 Lessons from Politics

January 13, 2017

At lunch today with a political consultant, we discussed the presidential campaign. Here are two things that drive me crazy about HRC and DNC that you should think about for your own company.

The first thing is that the same team that lost four years ago (in a primary) was probably not going to win you this election. While I understand loyalty, we are in politics and business to win.

Marketing Lesson from the Election

November 9, 2016

A couple of marketing lessons from the campaign. (Non-political).

If your Brand is broken, run a Branding campaign not a negative campaign.

When your brand is broken -- maybe your uptime is three eights instead of nines or maybe your customer service is notoriously awful - the buyer doesn't have trust in you.

Analysts' Views: Part 2

July 7, 2015

My buddy emailed me this morning about the "State of the UC Industry 2015: Experts Weigh In" piece. He asked why it was just about Cisco, Unify, ININ and Microsoft. It is interesting how no analyst report is all inclusive. I know there are 2000+ service providers, but it is the same 25 in every report.

Look Another Road Show (and Presentation)

October 28, 2014

Presentation after presentation is what the shows are all about. Sponsors pay for the show, so they get to stand on stage and give a presentation. That would be fine if the presentations didn't suck.

That's right.

The $14 Billion Dollar Announcement

December 3, 2012

While I don't agree with everything that Bruce writes here about AT&T's $14 Billion network spend in the next 3 years, there were a few take aways.

The big one is that the ILEC's have been getting rate hikes for years to pay for fiber that most customers are not receiving. FiOS is where it is - and that's the end of that project. U-Verse is fiber to the node and that isn't deployed everywhere either.

Rule 1: Respect the Audience

November 6, 2012

I might be hyper-sensitive when it comes to sessions - or I have sat through too many at this point in my life. Or maybe both.

Rule 1 when presenting: Respect the Audience!

Respect their time, their Attention (which is a precious gift) and their Intelligence.

Best Practices for Webinars

October 30, 2012

Just finished moderating a webinar for Kontiki on Adding Live Video to All-Hands. It seemed like a good time to go over some best practices for webinars for speakers.

  • Do not use cellphones if possible. The feedback from the phone and the poor call quality diminish the speaker's impact.
  • Speakerphones are not a good idea due to background noise. I have been on a lot of calls with barking dogs, TV blaring, and other noises.
  • Remember that it is ultimately about the content and the user experience.

ITEXPO West Wrap-Up

October 8, 2012

I'm home from ITEXPO West in Austin. It was another great show for me. The folks at TMC did another wonderful job putting it together.

Jaime H. juggled my press room meeting schedule on Tuesday, despite my last minute schedule changes.
