Cloud Should Transform Business

June 5, 2014

While working on a project, I keep thinking that the focus is on replacing current service - and that just doesn't make sense. Not everything that works on-premise can be jammed in the cloud and work the same. And it shouldn't.

This headline from ZDnet caught my eye: Urge to transform the business drives SaaS surge.

Sales Tip: Focus on Outcomes

December 19, 2013

Two articles today - here and here - that talk about SAAS and outcomes. In other words, customers aren't buying SAAS for the service but what the service will produce. As I have been saying all year: it isn't the app or the widget or the network; it is all about what people do with it. Focus on the outcome.

The M&A in the Clouds

November 4, 2013

Because so many companies are either flush with cash or have a heavy credit line, the acquisition activity has been robust.

Fist up, a merger of two cloud security companies: Total Defense Acquires iSheriff.

VMWare bought Desktone, a virtual desktop company who owns the Desktop as a Service trademark. This will be a nice add to VMware's own VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure) initiative with vCloud, vSphere and Horizon View. Someday DaaS will be big in North America.

RingCentral IPO and Other Activity

The US dollar isn't worth what it used to be. Twitter has an IPO filed that estimates the value at almost $13B. Twitter is still growing and on target for $1B in revenue but is losing about $110-$150 million per year. Co-founders Evan Stone and Noah Glass do not own any stock in the company.

The Cloud Service Brokerage Platform Business

September 18, 2013

At ITEXPO, I interviewed with Verio about their cloud services brokerage platform. At first, Verio teamed with Parallels; now, they have their own platform similar to Parallels - and the former VP at Paralllels to help them get their own platform going.

Parallels, shown here at the Hostway booth at Cloud Partners Expo, is a software architecture that was originally a control panel for webhosting companies. It was made more robust and became the control panel for hundreds of SAAS apps.

VAD's Becoming CSB's

May 28, 2013

I just like using acronyms. A VAD is a value added distributor like Tech Data, SYNNEX, Arrow, Ingram Micro and Insight. Like Dell and Microsoft, these companies have to shift their business model to adjust for a decline in hardware and software sales. Everything is going Cloud.

Some Tidbits About Cloud

May 6, 2013

Carbonite says that SMB accelerates - http://talkincloud.com/cloud-storage/carbonite-ceo-small-business-cloud-momentum-accelerates-0

Comcast opened a Cloud Services Marketplace, which sells cloud services like Carbonite data backup.

Apparently, cloud services brokerage is growing as Citrix just launched a program for cloud aggregators. There is even a referral and affiliate program with Citrix.

Some Interesting Reads

March 13, 2013

Zayo CEO Dan Caruso wrote a good blog titled "Is Bandwidth Production Lucrative?". In the wake of Jim Crowe stepping down at Level3, Caruso's analysis of the fiber players in an interesting read.

Personally, I think these CEOs - Crowe, Hesse, and others - have to take more responsibility for revenue, integration, value and culture. The role of CEO is more than just setting some ambiguous vision that your reports then have to crystallize and execute on.

The Changing VAR World

October 15, 2012

Opening evening at UBM's BoB Conference was a panel discussion about the change in the VAR and MSP community. This is a collection of tweets about the panel discussion #bob12.

Social Media (SM) , mobility, are cloud - threats to some, opportunities to some - both to many.

I can't always write about everything happening, so here are some tidbits:
