Waiting on the Channel

June 15, 2017

Whether it is TPX CEO Richard Jalkut or other channel executives, providers are impatiently waiting on the channel to jump off selling network and start selling other things.

The products that have been launched recently sit in big buckets titled IOT, Cyber-Security, Managed Services, SD-WAN and of course UC (UCaaS, UCC, WCC).

Rich Tehrani has a nice read about AI and analytics transforming companies like Vodafone.

COLOTRAQ has a new IT Risk/Cyber-security Assessment and Planning Service.

Cisco's Business at Risk?

June 4, 2017

"CEO Chuck Robbins' first orders of business upon taking the helm at Cisco was to initiate a transformation away from hardware and shift to a software, cloud, and recurring revenue model. Last quarter was yet another example of Cisco's slow but steady progress. Total revenue declined 2% to $11.6 billion," reports Madison.com.

There is an interesting article on Business Insider about Facebook making switches and routers for themselves.

Merger Synergies and CX

May 24, 2017

Sonus is merging with GENBAND. Last year Sonus bought Taqua for $20M. The talk is all about synergies and higher EBITDA. Oh and Accretive. No talk about how they will better serve their customers.

Beating the SD-WAN Drum

May 2, 2017

I was shocked that Cisco bought Viptela for >$600M. I thought Cisco would buy Velocloud. (Someone will soon.) With Viptela, Cisco keeps Verizon as a customer. It also gets partnerships with CA, SingTel, Westcon, EMC and zScaler.

Will Broadview Help Windstream?

April 17, 2017

In this CRN interview** with Austin Herrington, senior director of product management at Windstream, the strategy is laid out.

Was it just October that Windstream let its small business customers go? At that time didn't they tell the partner community that they only wanted deals $1250 and above? Didn't they cut commissions on Paetec customers?

After Show Tidbits (Part 2453)

April 14, 2017

Item 1:

Deloitte acquired most of the assets of Day1 Solutions Inc., a cloud consulting firm to provide deeper cloud expertise. CIO Magazine explains, "Deloitte needs Day1 for the same reason Accenture needs Genfour, Genpact needs Rage Frameworks and Infosys needs Panaya. The problem for Deloitte and for every traditional services company is that their clients do not believe they have the digital skills to lead the digital transformation journey the clients want their business to undertake."

The Quota-Price Collision

April 12, 2017

The one question that keeps coming up: How do you hit quota (which incidentally never goes down) when the pricing is declining?

What do you do when a $60K MPLS network is replaced with a $40K SD-WAN network? And when some of those Internet links are not even on the carrier's network?

What do you do when 10GB trans-continental private lines are so ridiculously low?

Telecom Tidbits (Part 2452)

April 11, 2017

Coming at you from the Channel show in Vegas, where TelePacific reveals its new brand as TPX Communications. Tele and Pacific didn't fit a managed services provider with a nationwide reach. TPX is more interested in selling UCaaS, managed IT, SD-WAN and managed security these days. The name change is to reflect that.

Will SD-WAN Crush Cisco?

March 14, 2017

As more and more providers add SD-WAN, what happens to Cisco (and ADTRAN and Juniper)?

Think about this: SD-WAN providers use an appliance as the CPE or end-point. This appliance can function as a switch, router and more. It can be a firewall, a wireless access point and more.

Jumping on the Cloud Bandwagon

March 7, 2017

More master agencies are claiming the cloud, so to speak. They are signing up cloud providers faster than the ink can dry on the agreement. (Ben Bronston must be busy.)

They are jumping on the bandwagon for a number of reasons.
