Colocation provider, FiberMedia Group, combined with Bay Area Internet Services under the new name: vXchnge. BAIC was acquired by the Stephens Group, which also owns FiberMedia.

FYI, a nice chart of the top retail colocation companies. Equinix is at about $2B of annual revenue at the top of this space and Savvis is second at approximately $1 Billion.

The Ridiculousness of My Cloud

December 30, 2013

"Finally a cloud of your own" by Western Digital. You can watch the commercial here. WD My Cloud personal cloud storage is a funny idea. People can't secure their home wireless router.

Email Encryption on the Rise?

December 30, 2013

Glenn Greenwald is the reporter that broke the Snowden story this year. Greenwald stated that the biggest outcome of the story in 2013 is that more email is encrypted than before.

PGP was created in 1991, per Wikipedia. 22 years later, businesses are catching on.

3 Top Trends That Will Affect Telecom in 2014

December 30, 2013

I was reading the Stratfor intelligence newsletter with its Top 5 Trends That Will Shape 2014. It's an interesting list.

  1. An enduring detente between Iran and the United States
  2. The rise of nationalist and extremist parties in Europe
  3. Russia and Germany bargain over Central/Eastern Europe and energy policy
  4. China's return to strongman politics
  5. Domestic turmoil and economic stress in India and Turkey

Another article mentioned that Israel is having a water shortage. People joke about water being what we fight the next world war over, but it isn't much of a joke.

The M&A in the Clouds

November 4, 2013

Because so many companies are either flush with cash or have a heavy credit line, the acquisition activity has been robust.

Fist up, a merger of two cloud security companies: Total Defense Acquires iSheriff.

VMWare bought Desktone, a virtual desktop company who owns the Desktop as a Service trademark. This will be a nice add to VMware's own VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure) initiative with vCloud, vSphere and Horizon View. Someday DaaS will be big in North America.

Will the NSA Hurt US Cloud Revenue?

June 10, 2013

The whistleblower / traitor was revealed in the NSA scandal: Edward Snowden. I have been reading a lot about this whole situation.

Apparently, this story was broken last year, but no one paid attention. "William Binney, a 32-year veteran of the secretive agency, and one of the best codebreakers in NSA history" was interviewed by the NY Times.

The NSA Spying Scandal isn't New

June 7, 2013

Remember back in 2003 when a whistleblower from AT&T pointed out Room 641A that the NSA used to spy on all AT&T long distance calls and Internet traffic? Verizon and Qwest denied they did, too.

Put on your foil hat because I am going to make some crazy points.

The FCC only wants to deal with a few companies, not thousands of them.

Are Outages The New Normal?

April 24, 2013

This is a guest column from Peter Eisengrein, SVP Network Operations & Design, Evolve IP

Last week one of the nation's largest carriers experienced an outage that affected tens, if not hundreds of thousands of Voice over IP users, maybe more. At least one carrier employee dubbed the outage "catastrophic" yet the news media shrugged. While not exactly a reliable news source, even social media, which is at least a quick indicator of newsworthy events, hardly noticed.

How can it be that a "catastrophic" outage that is so far reaching never made the news?

Your Cellphone is Spying on You

October 18, 2012

There is so much talk about malware on Windows computers. Apple users think they are safe. HA! It was simply a matter of volume. Now that iOS is on millions of devices it is worth the time for bad guys to turn their focus.
