UCaaS Round-Up (Tidbits 2443)

November 16, 2016

Nextiva, a Broadsoft powered ITSP, announced at their user conference that it has released a new UC&C or Workplace Comms platform that they created internally named NextOS. Nextiva has 100K SMB customers. It is surprising that they didn't make an SD-WAN announcement, similar to Vonage Biz's SmartWAN or TelePacific's UC-X with SD-WAN options.

When asked if this wasn't just a wrapper around Broadsoft's UC-One or other packages, Nextiva replied, "NextOS was completely imagined and developed in-house."

Is UCaaS Growing?

October 31, 2016

The latest financials came out in the last week. Let's examine if UCaaS is growing.

RingCentral Office annualized exit recurring software subscriptions (ARR) grew 39% year-over-year to $316.8 million. RC says they are growing margins and revenue, while also increasing their losses.

Nothing But Vanilla Pudding

July 29, 2016

Do you remember playing musical chairs in school? The music begins a chair is removed and you circle around until the music stops. When the music stops, you try to sit in a chair and not be left standing. Channel positions seem a lot like that right now.

The SPIFF War

July 12, 2016

Money is practically free, so why not use it for a land grab? This is the premise behind the industry consolidation. It is hard to grow organically, so grow inorganically by buying competitors or new markets (like Vonage and Nexmo).

But eventually you think out the herd of competitors that you can afford to buy and now you have the real revenue growth numbers staring at your face.

It Got Complicated

June 15, 2016

PRI's were easy. They are based on a standard. There were only two configurations that the gear could have. It worked 99% of the time. Now we have SIP Trunks to replace PRI and POTS.

Monday Morning Thoughts on Sales and Strategy

February 1, 2016

This testimonial for ANPI by an RLEC is worth listening to just to understand the thinking behind moving to cloud comms. Try at least the first 90 seconds.

Seth Godin's blog today describes not a pyramid, but a Frustum. Seth uses the music business as the example, but I see it in the telecom industry today.

Utility VoIP

October 1, 2015

Ran across a website that called their Hosted VoIP solution Utility VoIP. I thought that was appropriate because in so many cases it is sold as dial-tone replacement. Nothing more.

We are almost 12 years in and No HD Voice, No Fax over IP.

My SIP Product Wish List

September 8, 2015

Star2Star announced StarSIP which is a SIP trunking service with some enhanced features. It made me start to think about what I would like to see in a SIP Trunk product.

It is all me-too service today: some form of dial-tone either OTT (over the top riding on the existing Internet bandwidth) or on a dedicated circuit. Small business like the straight up POTS replacement, right?

What the Studies About UC Say

August 25, 2015

WOW! In a study of 1,000 businesses by Evolve IP, "71.5% were not very familiar with what "Unified Communications" actually is". You can scratch that off your SEO key word list right now.

The stat that "40 percent of participants are already using elements of a Unified Communications (UC) solution" is misleading because UC is a garbage term for many components of voice, video and comms.

Sales is Transitioning, Are Salespeople?

July 17, 2015

Insurance companies had to learn how to sell in today's marketplace, too. (See GapingVoid here.) It is the age of the smarter conversation.

Sales has to be about the business and its goals and outcomes. Otherwise sales cycles will increase and transition to IP and Cloud will stall.
