The Trend Toward Global Expansion

June 9, 2015

We are seeing an interesting trend. The ILECs are going global. AT&T, Verizon and CenturyLink are looking to other global markets to make up for a decline in revenue in the US.

AT&T made acquisitions in cellular in LATAM.

UC Trends in Q1 2015

March 24, 2015

Just back from the CP Expo in Vegas, I am still catching up and digesting what is in store for 2014 in the Channel and it looks like the Hosted VoIP space. Most noise at the show was around Hosted VoIP.

Two studies out about SMB trends. One from Intermedia.Net late last year is around mobile trends.

Verizon Invites the Channel Once More

March 20, 2015

Jon Arnold wrote up a good review of Verizon's Broad Cloud offering (VCE). One glaring problem is that it targets in the SMB market.

Arnold says that it is presented as a TDM replacement service. Why then is VCE promoted online in VZ Enterprise?

Telecom News Tidbits Part 2927

February 27, 2015

A few things going on besides the color of a dress and the FCC orders (here and here). Here are some telecom tidbits.

Windstream didn't have good results this quarter. The former CFO/ new CEO had some explaining to do, including about the SMB market:

"CLEC SMB opportunities remain "challenging," said Bob Gunderman, Windstream CFO and treasurer, according to a transcript from Seeking Alpha.

Selling Storage in a Free For All Market

June 25, 2014

I say consumer storage market because for small business with less than 15 employees, consumer apps are used. Earlier this week, Microsoft offered 1TB of storage on OneDrive to Office365 customers. (Thx Pete Davis for the heads-up.)

Today, at I/O, Google brings out the big guns -- unlimited storage for $10 per month and Office editing.

Things That May Interest You

April 24, 2014

There are a bunch of things that I want to comment on but just don't have the time. Yet they may be of interest to you. I did get to comment on the FCC's net neutrality ruling and the Cbeyond-Birch merger.

For one thing, I hope that the CBEY-Birch deal doesn't become the Fairpoint-VZ deal.

Wanted Windy West Data Center

December 11, 2013

Windstream CEO Jeff Gardner stated during the Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2013 Leveraged Finance conference, "We're really at a time where we can start looking out at acquisitions again to accelerate this transformation focused on the enterprise space obviously." Despite having work to do on the PAETEC integration still, Windstream will be looking for assets to add to its national enterprise system. Likely, this will be a data center on the West Coast. That could prove expensive for the following reasons: data centers are a hot commodity that a number of other CLECs are also looking at for purchase; Windstream's debt load is high and if it weren't for the stock dividend it pays out, the stock would reflect it; and their revenue profile.

Let's look at WIND revenue: 72% comes from broadband.

Birch closed on its Lightyear Networks deal, since Lightyear settled its USF contribution dispute with the FCC - even during a shutdown.

How Many VARs Are There Anyway

July 31, 2013

This is a LONG post. Kind of rambling. Sorry about that. But it does have some really good nuggets of info. Thanks for reading.

2 Studies and Some Tidbits

July 16, 2013

Metaswitch did a study on cloud + telcos + SMB and found that telcos may not be the trusted cloud providers that small business wants. "Existing phone providers overlooked for IP: Just 10 percent of pre-IP SMBs would even consider getting information about IP communications from their existing phone provider. Eighteen percent of 50-plus-employee SMBs would contact rival providers directly."

Another take on the Metaswitch survey demonstrates that the speed of a quote (and knowing what you are talking about) are factors to the sale.
