What is Verizon Doing?

February 22, 2016

After the rumors a couple of weeks ago that were covered by me, Rich Tehrani, TMC's TechZone and Ramblings, Verizon put an offer on a slightly used CLEC with fiber and spectrum for $1.8 Billion. VZ will be buying it directly from Carl Icahn who owns XO. VZ might not be able to take ownership for 2017 due to approvals needed.

According to Bloomberg, "Verizon Communications Inc. agreed to buy fiber-optic networks from Carl Icahn's XO Communications LLC and lease spectrum for about $1.8 billion, giving the nation's largest wireless carrier more Internet bandwidth for corporate clients and airwaves to test faster wireless technology."

A Big Deal in the Works?

February 3, 2016

The rumors are swirling about a couple of big deals in the works. I think many folks would like to see Comcast buy T-Mobile.

I don't think anyone wants to buy Sprint, whose wireline - the old Pin Drop fiber Network - is only bringing in $581 million in revenue these days. That won't help offset the $33.8 Billion in debt that is hanging over them.

News Tidbits Part 2919

July 30, 2015

Windstream joins the likes of TelePacific, the old Airband (now UNSi) and numerous WISPs in offering Fixed Wireless. "Windstream's Fixed Wireless is a technology solution for carrier-grade Ethernet and Internet-over-Ethernet connectivity delivered by digital microwave technology, and is currently offered in Chicago, Ill., New York, N.Y., Northern New Jersey, N.J., and Milwaukee, Wis." [source]

Windstream is in battle at the FCC to get IP equivalent wholesale products from AT&T as TDM retires. It is not going well.

Merger Noise in June

June 9, 2015

BroadSoft gobbled up mPortal, which "designs and develops customer experiences across mobile, web and other connected devices." [Marketing noise for app and portal.] It turns out that BroadSoft Design is actually mPortal. It has something to do with BroadSoft's UC-One.

The IOCs and RLECs are in the midst of a tempest due to USF Reform and other legislative changes taking place. A consortium of (unnamed) Independent telcos bought Codero.

The RBOCs: Copper, Spectrum, Regulation and Sales

February 3, 2015

We have just 2 RBOCs - regional Bell companies left - AT&T and Verizon. You might consider CenturyLink an RBOC (because of US West), but since they don't have the same business model as the other 2, I just mean the two Bell-head companies with their Jekyll cellular side.

Both have been running from wireline for a while -- since maybe 2006. I think they wanted forbearance to get rid of unions and that copper plant.

What I Read Over the Weekend

June 23, 2014

This could have been a good case study article if it had been more specific. Instead it is full of vague assumptions. Not helpful at all.

AT&T is adding cities in NC to its U-Verse with GigaPower.

Re-Vamping Telecom

December 6, 2013

The FCC has already made some moves to revamp telecom. There was USF reform, funding for broadband, elimination of a lot of regulations, pilot test with Vonage on direct DID access and the TDM-to-IP migration.

The Broadband money (NTIA, BIP, BTOP) as well as the Lifeline (Obama phone) program has seen its share of abuses, but billion dollar programs will do that. The FCC needs to tighten that up.

If Mobile is Everything

December 2, 2013

Fred Wilson repeats that Mobile is Eating the World. It might be just what I am reading (my influence bias). It's all about tablets or smartphones. Where does that leave your business in 2 or 3 years?

The FCC is Busy (Part 2)

September 25, 2013

Top stories at the FCC, where there seems to be a lot of activity lately.

The FCC's Wireline Competition Bureau clarified the rules for data collection for Special Access circuits. WC Docket No. 05-25 Report and Order is out.

Susan Crawford writes, "The giant companies that sell access to the Internet are working on multiple fronts to ensure that no regulator has any real authority over them." She is talking about the last 2 RBOCs - AT&T and Verizon, although VZ is the one making the most noise with its lawsuit against the FCC.

"The Obama administration has filed a petition with the Federal Communications Commission asking that all wireless carriers be required to unlock all mobile devices," reports many sources.

Verizon Fights FCC for Editorial Control of Internet

September 9, 2013

Thanks to recent revelations, we know that Verizon, AT&T and others are feeding the NSA with all our emails, call records, Internet search history, etc. In the wake of this privacy nightmare, Verizon is in court fighting the FCC over more than just Net Neutrality.

Does the FCC have authority to enforce Net Neutrality rules? A court already ruled yes.
