Women Owned Start-up Code School Gets Investment

November 13, 2014

Tampa Bay had a little celebration this week as a women-owned start-up called gr8code received $5.4 million investment.

This is big for a number of reasons. It is one of the largest investments in a women-owned start-up in Florida. It is early stage money for a Tampa Bay based start-up, which is almost unheard of in this community.

A Brief Look at Big Data

August 25, 2014

The term Big Data makes me laugh because we live in the information age where we collect a ton of data. People may be pack rats and hoarders IRL (in real life), but digitally we are far worse. We live in a time when photo albums of weddings, children, family are all digital; the entire music collection is a hard drive failure away from missing; and we fill our hard drives to capacity and beyond (1TB external storage!)

The problem with all this data is search.

Notes from Metaswitch Forum

May 13, 2014

Day 2 for me at the Metaswitch Forum 2014 in New Orleans. Here are some of the notes and tips:

Bryan Grimm of Metaswitch says that NOW is the time for Hosted PBX sales. The Big Opportunity is now.

What is Innovation?

April 22, 2014

I hear the word bantered about a lot especially by media, C-Level execs and government types. This week it was the "Innovation Economy". well, that makes sense since the USA's only lead globally has been in innovation, but the rest of the world is catching up due to this thing called the Internet (an invention of ours, btw).

New and improved isn't really innovation.

The Wearable Tech Futures

April 21, 2014

Amid all the noise about the growing Internet of Things market comes the announcement that Nike is disbanding its FuelBand team.

Nike and Adidas were at the Wearable Tech Expo / FAST in December. To see this announcement, speculation would be that wearable tech is not promising. I don't think that is it.

The Channel is Shrinking

February 20, 2014

According to a study reported by Channelomics, "A new report by the Kauffman Foundation, a non-profit economic think tank, finds the number of U.S. technology companies five years or younger has fallen precipitously compared to the peak level in 2001."

One reason cited is consolidation. No kidding.

There's No Such Thing as Free

January 29, 2014

There are costs to delivering service. There really isn't a free. I get asked a lot about WebRTC. It's a free client for video conferencing. In a way, yes it is.

Telecom Tidbits Part 133

January 16, 2014

Master Agency Telephony Partners has re-branded as Acuity Technologies. Why the re-brand? More than just the shift to cloud, the industry will be just one - IT and telecom - "a comprehensive technology infrastructure company that can provide solutions covering the entire spectrum of technology." That's what Acuity CEO Josh Anderson is delivering and the name change is just a way to showcase that.

Panterra Networks will be unveiling a new data storage service at ITEXPO.

If Mobile is Everything

December 2, 2013

Fred Wilson repeats that Mobile is Eating the World. It might be just what I am reading (my influence bias). It's all about tablets or smartphones. Where does that leave your business in 2 or 3 years?
