Mary Meeker's Internet Trends

June 8, 2017

Mary Meeker of Kleiner Perkins puts out an annual report on Internet and Internet related trends. This year it is a 355 slide report. [You can download a pdf version here.] (Here is a 35 minute summary from Mary herself.)

Highlights:

Cisco's Business at Risk?

June 4, 2017

"CEO Chuck Robbins' first orders of business upon taking the helm at Cisco was to initiate a transformation away from hardware and shift to a software, cloud, and recurring revenue model. Last quarter was yet another example of Cisco's slow but steady progress. Total revenue declined 2% to $11.6 billion," reports Madison.com.

There is an interesting article on Business Insider about Facebook making switches and routers for themselves.

A Look at the Future of Wireline

May 10, 2017

The news out of small ILECs like TDS and Cincinnati Bell is that fiber to the home is selling well but more importantly is increasing retention and lowering churn. (Customer acquisition costs are very high in flat product segments like consumer broadband, cellular service and TV.)

Even Fairport, acquired by RLEC Consolidated, is upgrading its network for higher speeds. Some of this is due to the fact that cable is winning the broadband war.

The EC17 Overview: Experience Matters

March 30, 2017

Enterprise Connect seemed much bigger this year with 18 rows of booths, many of which were 20x20 or larger. There was much in the way of video conferencing and a couple of VR rooms.

The real buzz came from Amazon that launched Amazon Connect - Customer Contact Center in the Cloud. GE Appliances is one of Amazon Connect's initial customers (and shared the stage at EC17 with them).

Jumping on the Cloud Bandwagon

March 7, 2017

More master agencies are claiming the cloud, so to speak. They are signing up cloud providers faster than the ink can dry on the agreement. (Ben Bronston must be busy.)

They are jumping on the bandwagon for a number of reasons.

Yes, Fonality, I am Skeptical (of the VoIP Sector)

February 24, 2017

Apparently, one slightly snarky tweet and a single line item in Tidbits - "A head scratcher: Fonality got bought by Netfortis. Asterisk and Genband." - was annoying to the provider being acquired.

I spoke to five people in the VoIP space familiar with Fonality and none of them had much insight on why this move happened. Well, one answer: scale.

A Quick Look at Emerging Technologies for Next Week

January 31, 2017

Heading into ITEXPO next week, I am prepping for my session on Differentiation for SPs (Marketing) as well as my Women in Tech panel. The week after that I am in Nashville for FISPA speaking on SD-WAN, Marketing Fiber (FTTx) and a couple of other marketing topics. Then I am speaking at a sales kick-off on SD-WAN and more. That's why I want to take a quick run down on emerging technology.

Women in Tech at ITEXPO

January 17, 2017

On Wed., 2/8 at 3 pm, I will be moderating a panel on Women in Tech at ITEXPO in Ft Lauderdale. Why is a guy moderating this panel? Probably because I wanted to see this session at ITEXPO. When I took it to TMC, Dave and Erik told me to run with it.
