Big Data is Big Smoke

October 1, 2013

Over 10 years ago, a grocery chain in the Northeast, Stop & Shop, launched the customer loyalty or savings card. You know that card you need to swipe to get the advertised savings. After a couple of years they pulled the card for three reasons: one, the customers weren't happy with it; two, state law required the store to give everyone the savings anyway (if they asked for it); and three, they weren't getting a return on the data.

We didn't have Big data back then.

The Strain on Linear TV

September 23, 2013

Earlier this year TWC and CBS were in battle over content carriage contracts. It caused blackouts of CBS channels for a while. In 2012, there were 91 blackouts in the US. Congress isn't too happy that the masses are missing prime time because then they just complain about Congress.

The Lottery Mentality

August 9, 2013

"Girls star and generational lighting rod Lena Dunham made her big debut in New York City politics yesterday," according to the MIami New Times.

""Recent college graduates, she said, are 'struggling to find jobs and pay the rent and if they struggle for too long, they're leaving New York' for other cities, 'even Tampa,'" reports Capital NY on Dunham's remarks."

In Tampa Bay, there is always someone squawking about how to build a startup community, a Creative City, or how to get people to stay. Then I find out that just about every county in the US is facing the same dilemma. Strange, right?

Evolution of the White Board

June 13, 2013

I am at INFOCOMM this week, which is the big audio/video show. It is interesting to see the way white boards have evolved.

Clary makes a white board called Icon that is a 32" 60" TV with touch screen, a cart, a camera, speakers, and it runs win7. It is a PC, a TV monitor, a white board, and a video conferencing unit all on wheels.

Why is Telecom So Old?

February 10, 2013

Saw this picture on twitter. It made me think about the lack of innovation from the telcos.

For example. cellular and DSL technologies were discovered by Bell Labs in the 1960s, but didn't to market until decades later.

We Start the Year With Mergers

January 2, 2013

Two Tampa companies merge "to create a Hybrid SuperVAR" (whatever that is). Vology acquired Bayshore Technologies. Vology is a hardware reseller. Bayshore Tech is systems integrator and will provide professional services for the combined company.

The Changing VAR World

October 15, 2012

Opening evening at UBM's BoB Conference was a panel discussion about the change in the VAR and MSP community. This is a collection of tweets about the panel discussion #bob12.

Social Media (SM) , mobility, are cloud - threats to some, opportunities to some - both to many.

"Behave like a three-year old: fall down, learn something, try again."

The New Job Marketplace

October 15, 2012

Jobvite has a slide deck about the future of work. Bigger companies are not creating the same amount of jobs - or the same kind of jobs. Technology replaced a lot of workers, even some salespeople.

The 3 C's - Consolidation, Cloud, (global) Competition - are eliminating jobs by the tens of thousands - ask CenturyLink, Verizon, Cisco, HP.

ITEXPO West Wrap-Up

October 8, 2012

I'm home from ITEXPO West in Austin. It was another great show for me. The folks at TMC did another wonderful job putting it together.

Jaime H. juggled my press room meeting schedule on Tuesday, despite my last minute schedule changes.
