Follow the Money

May 4, 2016

Where is the investment money going?

Did you see that Apple had a revenue problem? Not as many iPhones are selling. "Benedict Evans (@benedictevans) says the mobile wave, which is split between mobile phones (voice/SMS) and smartphones, is coming to an end, and the next obvious market for growth is cars." Ben's blog is here and the slide deck is here.

Food for Thought (Tidbits #2434)

May 2, 2016

Tidbits today but not all of them are about telecom.

From James Altucher: "Automation is eating the world. Every time a line of software is written, a job is lost." VR, 3D printing, AI and robotics will make us all unemployed soon. what then?

How To Win at UCaaS

February 3, 2016

Wainhouse research says that the UCaaS industry will grow at a rate of 24% year over year. 8x8 is doing that with their revenue. "Total revenue of $53.2 million increased 29% year-over-year; service revenue of $48.9 million increased 29% year-over-year," despite still losing money.

Seeking Alpha wrote, "RingCentral's move upmarket is substantially increasing their revenue per seat and allowing them to drive the top line." Well, same thing at 8x8, which raised its ARPU to $369 from $305 last year.

Collision of Titans

November 23, 2015

As the hype would have you believe, the world is moving to the cloud. Well, it is happening, just not as fast as many say (or hope). For one thing, migrating software to the cloud is not as simple as some make it out to be. It takes planning, testing and executing.

HP, The Idea Economy and You!

November 9, 2015

HP is re-organizing. It was quite the behemoth: "a $110 billion company that operated in 120 countries with more than 700 legal entities, and an IT infrastructure that spanned three data centers." Meg Whitman penned a look at HP and the Idea Economy on LinkedIn.

I tend to agree with many of her points.

We live in an age of disruption.

News Tidbits Part 2920

October 15, 2015

Alan Percy at Dialogic has a nice write up of our panel about Open Source for service providers from ITEXPO. The panel discussion with Dialogic, XO and Netsapiens was so good that I am sorry it was not recorded. Read it here and at the end of the post sign up for the study data.

Fiber to the Tower is still driving growth for RLECs. Fairpoint is even seeing a need to start a construction division.

As A Service

October 9, 2015

We have seen UC as a service, software as a service, Infrastructure and Platforms as a service, Desktop and even Disaster Recovery as a Service. What is next?

WAN as a Service seems to be popping up as the next synonym for dynamic bandwidth or SDN (software defined network). It is the name for SD-WAN or the replacement for MPLS.

The Broadband Competition Problem

September 23, 2015

Big discussion over at AVC on Fred Wilson's blog post about the lack of broadband competition. After the broadband report came out, this apparently was a shock to some:

"Today, nearly 40 percent of American households either do not have the option of purchasing a wired 10 Mbps connection or they must buy it from a single provider. Three out of four Americans do not have a choice of providers for broadband at 25 Mbps, the speed increasingly recognized as a baseline for broadband access."

The discussion revolves around - surprise - arbitrage! There would be investment IF there was enough money in last mile residential; if regulation was lighter; if, if, if.

The Velocity of Change

September 11, 2015

I edited this message from President of the TCA, Jeff Ponts (also President of CloudMSP and COO/EVP of master agency Datatel Solutions). Much of what he says is poignant. The Velocity of Change is very striking to me.

The Velocity of Change and the Customer Experience

Next week many of you will be filling the tradeshow hall at the Cloud Partner Conference and Expo at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston September 16-18th. Channel Managers will be lined up to scan your badge, hand you tchotchkes, and updated flyers of their product offerings.
