My EarthLink Strategy

March 4, 2011

When I analyze the four CLEC components of the new EarthLink Business, I wonder what Atlanta will do with it.

Deltacom had a huge fiber network (IFN) that essentially went under-utilized. In my experience, many employees did not know about IFN. Assets like lit buildings, collocations, colo gear, and the fiber maps are crucial to revenue generation from those hard cost assets.

The Hosted UC Script

February 28, 2011

I'm at Enterprise Connect (formerly VoiceCon) where the talk is all about CLOUD. (Surprise!) Cloud Communications from Cisco, Avaya, Shoretel (Untangling Complexity), Microsoft Lync, Sprint, IBM, Smoothstone, XO and Verizon. I didn't see a MITEL booth but at least 5 MITEL folks are speaking. Dan York is here.

VoIP Consolidation Well Underway

February 22, 2011

There's been some M&A among VoIP Providers this year but there is more on the horizon. CLEC's are looking to get in the game with an acquisition. Indeed EarthLink did just that with its quiet acquisition of STS Telecom, a former UNE-P then Sylantro shop in South Florida (to go with its purchase of Deltacom).

Other ITSP's are actively seeking an acquisition or hoping one will come along.

ITEXPO Dinner Plans

February 3, 2011

So last night was the dinner gathering where I invite everyone to come have a Dutch treat meal with some great conversation. Last night was no different. Maybe this show should be known as the end to end communications solution show because when you are here you meet everyone who touches the space.

End users looking for deployment and install answers.

Bits and Pieces

January 24, 2011

The TCA has over 370 agent members now. Certification is underway. Are you becoming a Certified Telecom Professional?

STS Telecom and Saturn Telecommunications became part of Deltacom today, which is now EarthLink Business, according to an FCC filing.

The Winds of Change on The Channel

January 20, 2011

The last six months has seen many channels at the Channel Chief level at XO, Level3, MegaPath, and other carriers. Also, the M&A has resulted in a tumulus time for The Channel. Qwest and CentruyLink. Embarq and CenturyTel. New Edge Networks with One Comm. and Deltacom. CavTel and PAETEC.

Cox Business on Hosted PBX Roll Out

January 20, 2011

I recently interviewed Mike Bolognini, vice president of Cox Business and Hospitality Network in Las Vegas, about the planned rollout of Hosted PBX in Southern Nevada. Below are Mr. Bolognini's responses.

RAD: What is the biggest challenge you will face as you plan the rollout of Hosted PBX in Southern Nevada?

COX: The introduction of any new technology brings with it a learning curve.

What Does That List Mean?

January 12, 2011

There are always lists. Everybody comes up with Top 10, Top 5, Best of, blah, blah, blah. What does the list actually mean though?

For years I have heard about the JD Power awards, but have no idea what the criteria for winning one is.

2 More Acquisitions

January 6, 2011

Rumor from SFGate is it that Skype bought Qik for $100 million. Qik's smartphone video streaming service has grown to 5 million users. That doesn't mean revenue though - and Skype should know, right? Only 6% of its 124 million users contribute to the bottom line.

UC is on the Rise: No Kidding

January 4, 2011

All the trends, lists, predictions are out now. Of course, UC is will see record growth and Cloud Computing too. No kidding! They are both in infancy (relatively speaking), so there is nowhere to go but up.
