A Brief Talk with XO's Tom Gorey

December 27, 2010

Here's the last interview of 2010 with Tom Gorey, Vice President Channel Strategy & Development at XO Communications. Gorey is an active member of TCA. He and I have had a few chats this year about educating the Channel and its importance for the future of Agents and VAR's.

Contract Termination Class

December 17, 2010

A mandatory webinar on ETF, Contract Termination and Shortfall Charges today. The ILEC starts out by blaming tariffs for the clunky processes that require Agents to spend so much time and effort every single move, add, change and even upgrade. (One question was, "Do you even want more revenue from the customer? [Because you don't act like it!]).

Net-Head Talking Coming Up

September 7, 2010

At ChannelVision Expo, I will be presenting Bell-Head versus Net-Head. I have been discussing that here and in Internet Telephony magazine since January 2009. I will be touching on that in a session titled Upselling SIP Trunking at CVX, where we talk about SIP Trunking just being a stepping stone to the water fall of IP Communications. (You know that buzz word: UC?)

So this is draft one of the talk slides:

There is certainly still money to be made selling POTS, DSL, T1, and cellular services - commodities all of them - but to make money in the future will need to understand and embrace IP - Metro Ethernet, Waves, Hosted PBX, SAAS, UC, and everything CLOUD.

3 Reasons I Get a Rash from my Industry

August 23, 2010

Actually, I don't get a rash from the Industry but from a large portion of the people in my Industry.

There are so many changes happening right now - every where. Our Industry is experiencing so many factors: declining prices, hyper-competition, anti-competitive actions, forbearance, Net Neutrality, and so much more.

Agents are locked in their business model and don't want to step outside the comfort zone.

An Interview With Level3

August 11, 2010

As a founding member of the Technology Channel Association, I get to interface with some of the channel execs. One that I have a lot of respect for is Craig Schlagbaum, VP Indirect Channels, Level 3. Craig let me interview him about changes in the channel.

So You Want Agents to Sell Your Stuff

July 14, 2010

Many companies come to me for Channel Consulting. Either they have an Indirect sales channel that isn't working or they want to start using that free sales team called the indirect agent.

The Indirect Sales Channel has appeal because they don't have a recurring cost until they sell something. No salary, benefits, office furniture, lease, car allowance, cell phone, utilities, etc.

However, you do have to have Channel Management and Support.

You also have to choose your agents carefully. Having hundreds of agents is expensive to manage and Pareto's Rule applies everywhere.

The Big Push to the Cloud

May 25, 2010

The news is awash with stuff being pushed into the Cloud. Everything is going hosted. Reading press releases, it seems that conferencing is changing and everyone is rolling out a hosted PBX solution. It's a frenzy of zombies following the crowd.

Here are the problems: How do you stand out in the crowd?
