Will Broadview Help Windstream?

April 17, 2017

In this CRN interview** with Austin Herrington, senior director of product management at Windstream, the strategy is laid out.

Was it just October that Windstream let its small business customers go? At that time didn't they tell the partner community that they only wanted deals $1250 and above? Didn't they cut commissions on Paetec customers?

Windstream Bites Again

April 14, 2017

Windstream just finished the paperwork on closing EarthLink. Now they are buying Broadview Networks in an all cash deal for $227M, of which $161M is to pay debt. [WIND gets $183M in NOLs though and 4.6x 2016 OIBDA, for you accounting geeks.] This will be WIND's 6th UC platform - Broadsoft, Metaswitch, Allworx, Avaya, Mitel. Broadview's OfficeSuiteUC is home built, just like Fuze, 8x8, RC, Broadvoice, Jive and many others.

The surprise was that Broadview only had 20K business customers, of which 7,300 utilize their cloud based services!

Is Amazon Going to Buy Vonage?

April 3, 2017

Amazon rolled out Chime, a Webex and GoToMeeting knock-off with Vonage as its partner for consumers and small biz. It turns out that Level3 is the partner for enterprise.

At EC17, Amazon launched a self-serve cloud contact center. (Once again Amazon took software it created and used internally and made it a commercial product like S3 and AWS.) The partner for this was Twilio.

The EC17 Overview: Experience Matters

March 30, 2017

Enterprise Connect seemed much bigger this year with 18 rows of booths, many of which were 20x20 or larger. There was much in the way of video conferencing and a couple of VR rooms.

The real buzz came from Amazon that launched Amazon Connect - Customer Contact Center in the Cloud. GE Appliances is one of Amazon Connect's initial customers (and shared the stage at EC17 with them).

M&A Update (#2448)

March 8, 2017

So many transactions. Companies are being bought and sold like a game of Go Fish.

Avaya sold its networking business to Extreme Networks for a paltry $100M (It is about $200M in revenue). That $100M does not make a dent in the billions in debt that Avaya is trying to scrape off in bankruptcy.

4 Problems with the UC Market

February 27, 2017

On a LinkedIn blog, Telarus co-founder Patrick Oborn writes about the fact that 72% of businesses have not transitioned to cloud communications. 72%!!!

After 15 years, 2000+ providers can only take a 28% handhold in the market?

The growth rate of Hosted PBX (HPBX/UC/UCaaS) has always been a hopeful bad guess.

The Desk Phone is Not Done .. Yet

February 14, 2017

OBIHAI, Grandstream, Yealink, Yeastar and VoIP Supply were just a few of the booths at ITEXPO with desk phones. While many say that the desk phone is over, there are still companies that say Not So Fast! They were pretty much hanging out in Ft Lauderdale last week.

ITEXPO: The UC Outlook

February 10, 2017

The future of UC is bright says a number of executives at UCaaS providers. But is it?

I spoke with a few VoIP executives including CoreDial at ITEXPO. There are two separate layers: cheap voice or POTS replacement and people who want a comms platform.

How Do You Enable Partners?

January 31, 2017

RingCentral VP of Channel, Zane Long, did an interview with Channel Vision. He states, "Partners need the right sales support and enablement in order to be successful. It isn't enough to have just an amazing product or the richest commissions, because if partners are not fully enabled to really market it, they will not position your product first. The cloud communications marketplace is crowded and the demand for these competing solutions is evident (as noted in my earlier predictions).
