Net-Head Talking Coming Up

September 7, 2010

At ChannelVision Expo, I will be presenting Bell-Head versus Net-Head. I have been discussing that here and in Internet Telephony magazine since January 2009. I will be touching on that in a session titled Upselling SIP Trunking at CVX, where we talk about SIP Trunking just being a stepping stone to the water fall of IP Communications. (You know that buzz word: UC?)

So this is draft one of the talk slides:

There is certainly still money to be made selling POTS, DSL, T1, and cellular services - commodities all of them - but to make money in the future will need to understand and embrace IP - Metro Ethernet, Waves, Hosted PBX, SAAS, UC, and everything CLOUD.

Broadsoft's First Public Quarter

August 10, 2010

So Monday morning I was on the very short investor call for Broadsoft's first quarter being public since it's IPO. Marketwatch has the 2Q2010 results here.

  • "Total revenue was $19.8 million in the second quarter of 2010, compared to $17.7 million in the second quarter of 2009"
  • Net loss for the second quarter of 2010 was $1.8 million
  • Net loss for the first six months of 2010 was $4.4 million

"During the second quarter, our license revenue increased 20%, to $10.6 million, compared to the first quarter of this year, reflecting service providers' demand, as they transition from TDM to IP-based communications, for our flagship product, BroadWorks, which enables carriers to deliver feature-rich IP-based communications services to their enterprise and consumer customers."

More than 50% of revenue is coming from licenses.

Predictions 7 Months Later

July 27, 2010

Back in December, I made some predictions in an interview with Rich Tehrani. One of them was about HD Voice. We added another Alliance slash Peering Group, but still not enough density yet for HD. I'm thinking maybe in 2012.  (BTW, I still get asked how to do Fax over IP and TDM is still the answer for any volume of outbound faxing.

My Thoughts on the BSFT IPO

June 17, 2010

Disclaimer: I work with both Broadsoft and its customers.

I was shocked to learn that Broadsoft hasn't made money yet. Granted some of their clients came through acquisitions of Genband and Sylantro, but they have 400+ clients including many large ILEC's worldwide.

Broadsoft raised about $76M from investors, including Bessemer Venture Partners, Grotrech Ventures, Charles River Ventures, Columbia Capital, RRE VEntures, Crescendo Ventures and Meritech Capital Partners.

Rich Calling is Different

June 3, 2010

Google Voice rolled out a new way to look at call management. (Even though GotVmail - now Grasshopper - had a similar product for a while with far less fanfare.) Phone.com, RingCentral and other companies have offerings that are similar to GOOG's Grand Central experiment.

I got to speak with Micheal Zirngibl at Ringio. Ringio is rolling out "Rich Calling".

VoiceCon and FISPA

I'm heading over to VoiceCon at the Gaylord Palm to work with XO interviewing attendees. The question: What does UC mean to you? I'm expecting 25 different answers. (Which will prove my point).

What Do You Need to Know?

February 16, 2010

On a discussion today about certification training for agents under the TCA  umbrella, we talked about what kind of training will it be.

Years ago, there was a CSP certification for agents that was created by Virgo (Phone+), Dale Stein of TAG, and Scott Levy. It didn't get much traction. Some think because of the money, but I think it's because agents don't want training.

How many agents think about the Industry, the Indirect Channel?
