When I analyze the four CLEC components of the new EarthLink Business, I wonder what Atlanta will do with it.

Deltacom had a huge fiber network (IFN) that essentially went under-utilized. In my experience, many employees did not know about IFN. Assets like lit buildings, collocations, colo gear, and the fiber maps are crucial to revenue generation from those hard cost assets.

Level3 Channel Update

Yesterday on its partner call, Level3 rolled out Level 3 Business Partner University. Most carriers that I have spoken with understand that educating the Channel is the key to revenue growth. "This training platform was designed to make these self-service modules easier to use with the information that you need to successfully sell Level 3 services - all at your own pace.

MPLS, SIP, Cloud, UC, Convergence - all of these changes are coming at VAR's and Agents at a time when they are still trying to survive the recent economic onslaught.

Two More Acquisitions

According to a letter to PAETEC employees, "Earlier today, we announced plans to acquire XETA Technologies, Inc. which will dramatically expand our capabilities to serve customers with unique, equipment-based solutions nationwide. XETA is very similar to Quagga (or what we used to call PAETEC ISG), providing innovative solutions to enterprise customers while delivering exceptional customer service."

PAETEC is using this $61M acquisition to boost its Managed Services business to the enterprise space. But at the same time they are worrying the Channel.

What to Do With a Certified Agent?

On the Board call for the TCA (Technology Channel Association) discussing the the next step in the evolution of the Certified Telecom Professional (CTP).

The exam (and certification) is just $199 for member agents (and member VAR's) of TCA. Employees of our Vendor members (Motorola, Qwest, Megapath, Global Crossing, Intercall, XO, Level3, Netwolves, Star2Star, US Signal, Telnes Broadband and SalesStream) can also take the exam.

There has been a groundswell of buzz around the certification. The next step is to get carrier support for the CTP.

The only non-profit trade association for telecom agents and VAR's, the Technology Channel Association (TCA) has launched a new and voluntary Certified Telecommunications Professional (CTP) program! This program will advance Agent business relationships and energize the indirect sales channel by:

  • Recognizing accepted standards of professional conduct and experience
  • Verifying the CTP understands critical industry fundamentals of the industry and how they apply to the end users and carriers

After a long tenure as a chemist for such companies as Oil of Olay, BIC Corp., Bayer and Glaxo, my shift into IT was through a friend who owned a Novell VAR. At the time, Novell 3.12 was as rock solid as Linux is. (Novell tried to use Linux as a lever against Microsoft. In 1993, Novell acquired Unix System Laboratories from AT&T, securing rights to UNIX.

Big Challenge Selling Hosted PBX

On LinkedIn (in the Hosted PBX group), the question was asked, "What's the biggest challenge you face selling your solution to end users and/or channel partners?" Here are some of the answers.

Can the end user trust the service delivery of the provider? This is a big question because there have been some failures in VoIP delivery over the years. VoIP has taken somewhat of a reputation hit.
