TCA Moves

August 9, 2012

The TCA, the only non-profit trade association for the channel partners (VAR's, agents, inter-connects, YOU), has a lot going on in the next two months.

Heading into CPExpo in Orlando, the TCA will hold its fifth Channel Chief Summit. The CCS is an opportunity for the top channel executives of our service provider members to meet face-to-face to learn and share. This time round, Quest CTO Mike Dillon and Parallels SVP John Zanni will be presenting to the participants.

Is Cloud Just Hype?

The Mobile Master Agent

July 2, 2012

There is a lot of chatter in the Channel about Transactional agents being replaced by VAR's and Consultative Agents. I see Master Agents having to do a similar dance real soon.

Tech Data is one of the largest VAD (value added distributors) in the world. Most VAR's have an account with TD to buy hardware.

Talking with the CMO of 8x8

June 25, 2012

8x8 has hit $100 million in annual revenue, making them one of the top 3 Hosted VoIP providers in the US. I had a chance to interview Debbie Jo Severin, Chief Marketing Officer of 8x8 this week.

My first question was about what kinds of marketing 8x8 does. (I didn't know that the Packet8 brand was no longer in use.)

The VDI Trend

June 22, 2012

EarthLink launched TechCare. "EarthLink TechCare is a fully managed outsourced help desk that is customizable and scalable, enabling customers to relieve their overburdened IT staffs and refocus on more strategic initiatives, " states the press release. Basically, it is a tech support hotline for companies. This follows their launch of Cloud Workspace, a hosted desktop and virtualization application service. VDI and Managed IT are the new tools in the CLEC kit.

The New Channel Myth

June 21, 2012

The new myth about the Channel that everyone is spouting is doom and gloom. In Larry Walsh's latest, he talks about VAR's closing, vendors selling direct and other woes.

Here's some news for you: the Channel has ALWAYS competed with Direct for sales - VAR's and Agents. And we always will.

Can some of this stuff be sold via a website?

So Much Stuff I Can't Get To

June 4, 2012

So many things to write about but just not enough time.

Leap Wireless gets the iPhone 4S under its Cricket brand to sell without subsidy for $500! Let's see how that works. It does come with No Contract though.

Is it Cloud versus Agents?

May 2, 2012

Is it Cloud versus Agents?

As an Agent, I sell bandwidth and transport almost exclusively. I am learning that the Channel does not want that business. The carriers do, but on the wholesale/carrier side.

Get Off the Agents' Back

April 12, 2012

These were my thoughts on the 2011 CPZ that I was a panelist on. These are my thoughts as a reaction to the latest CPZ.

Surprisingly, not everyone read my post about how the whole telecom eco-system is shifting. Agents, Masters, Carriers and Cloud Providers are all going to experience a Shift.

The Telecom Ecosystem is Shifting Rapidly

April 2, 2012

The telecom ecosystem consists of a number of pieces: RBOC, ILEC, RLEC, CLEC, ISP, MSO, IXC, ITSP, MSP, data centers, Master Agents, Agents, VAR's. It is shifting.

As carriers migrate from a commodity access business, so too must the master agents, who - more and more - are tying their business models to the preferred carriers.

Master Agents have morphed into a supermarket of services: CLEC, ILEC, MSO, VoIP, MSP and even hardware (like Shoretel).
