TCA Looking for a Few Good Agents

April 21, 2010

The Technology Channel Association is looking for a few good Agents. Are you a VAR, Inter-Connect, Systems Integrator, MSP, MCP, or traditional telecom agent?

Join TCA!

No. Really. Take 5 minutes to join the only non-profit trade association that is actively working to improve your industry - and thus your livelihood.

Like any non-profit, we need a few active volunteers to get projects done. That's where you come in. On May 5th at 1 PM Eastern time, we will be having an open agent call to get volunteers to help with membership and other activities. If you are interested, please join TCA or ping me. Thanks.

How Not to Sell VoIP

March 2, 2010

NGT presented a session on How to Sell VoIP at VoIP Nation. According to attendees, the NGT way to sell VoIP is to sell it on price. Wrong!

Channel Partners Need a Net-Head

March 1, 2010

Arrived in Vegas for the Channel Partners Expo (in conjunction with VoIP Nation).  Seems everyone I speak with is looking for sales. We have at least as many channel agents as we have always had, so why the growing need for sales?

I think one reason is that most of the channel partners are TDM. Plug and play.

Reclaim Some VoIP Gear

February 23, 2010

VoIP Supply LLC launched a program to buy back VoIP equipment named Reclaim. "Reclaim allows sellers of used and legacy equipment to undertake an easy four step process to receive fair market value for their equipment, " states Garrett Smith, Director of Marketing and Business Development at VoIP Supply.

Reclaim gives sellers a partial rebate on legacy equipment, which may allow them to upgrade their VoIP technology.

The Reclaim program is on track to buyback $2 million worth of used and legacy VoIP equipment in 2010. I wonder if VoIP Supply will be refurbing, recycling or re-selling the equipment?

Winning the Battle for SMB VoIP

January 25, 2010

We had a "winning" panel at ITEXPO last week in Miami Beach discussing How do service providers win over the SMB space with their VoIP offerings?

You can see the slides below. It was mainly a discussion about how VoIP providers sell to small business (about the 8-15 line space) the Hosted PBX service. While some of it is cost savings, I am seeing more and more small businesses (2-99 employees) ask about call quality and service reliability instead of price. That's the smart thing. Feedback welcome.

Making Money in IP Communications

January 20, 2010

In a room filled with VAR's, inter-connects and VoIP resellers (and one investor), our ITEXPO panel this morning discussed making money from IP communications.

How does the indirect channel make money from IP? It is SO different from TDM. This isn't really plug-and-play services.

Why You Are Going to Need The Channel

December 22, 2009

Hello, VoIP Providers. How are the sales going on your Hosted PBX? I'll bet you are selling SIP Trunking -- at a savings on regular PRI pricing, right? Nice. Lower the revenue while fixed costs increase.

Will You Be Extinct?

December 9, 2009

Yesterday I had lunch with XO's Tom Gorey and Peter Davis. We spoke about the fast changes taking place in the channel space. Tom used to work for Ingram Micro, so he understands the VAR space as well.

The big issue for both VAR's and Agents is that the price pressure on hardware and telecom services is shrinking margins and commissions fast. We all remember when Internet T1's were $1500.
