M&A Merger Rumors Abound

May 1, 2014

Sprint is getting set to offer a bid to buy T-Mobile, which is funny since the FCC already told Softbank Sprint that they would say no. But on the heals of the Comcast-TWC deal (that now involves Charter getting some TWC leftovers), Sprint thinks that it will be okay.

Then there is the AT&T buying DirecTV rumor. Never hear the rumor about DISH being bought, huh?

The Fight Between Verizon and Netflix

February 23, 2014

It seems to be all over the news (like here) that Verizon (and Comcast) aren't happy with Netflix. Netflix has too many users and eats up too much bandwidth.

Users buy bigger pipes and FiOS just to get faster (they think better) Internet access to enjoy Netflix or Hulu without buffering. Surprise!

Google Enters the Video Conference Space IRL

February 10, 2014

So Google is bringing Hangouts to your living room or your office. Google has launched a hardware package for video conferencing that is $1000. TechRepublic breaks it down, but simply it is Intel i7 processor in an ASUS computer with an HD camera, a combined speaker and microphone, and a remote control.

The service costs $250 per year and has connections to Vidyo and UberConference.

Video Closes More Business

November 14, 2013

From my inbox:

"The experiment: See how a webcam impacts sales efficiency for ShareFile. The result: A 34% increase in close rates.... the ShareFile sales team put the effectiveness of video conferencing to the test in the real world and increased their close rate by 34% just by turning on webcams in GoToMeeting."

Broadsoft Alum Acquired by Fidelity

October 17, 2013

Now that it is out there I can report that cloud-based video conferencing service, Vidtel, was acquired by Fidelity. Wainhouse, a research house for the telepresence industry, let the news out yesterday.

Vidtel, based in Sunnyvale, CA., was founded by former Broadsoft CMO, Scott Wharton, in 2008. Alex Doyle, another Broadsoft alum, was Vidtel's VP of Marketing.

4 New Items

September 3, 2013

Just back from ITEXPO in Vegas. Here are 4 news items worth noting.

1

Fast Company has an article about Amazon and its distribution system:

"Those 10 million Prime members (up from 5 million two years ago, according to Morningstar) are practically addicted to using Amazon.

Video is Going to be Big

August 7, 2013

Cisco did a survey of young execs. They predict video will be big. You'll see.

"A global study announced today by Cisco revealed that the majority of these next-generation executives intend to depend heavily upon business-class video to connect with their teams, colleagues, suppliers, customers and prospects, as well as to help their businesses deliver new products and services."

"The 2013 Cisco Global Young Executives' Video Attitudes Survey gives insight into what management-track leaders aged 34 and under think about business-class video": "Three out of five young executives say they will rely more heavily on business-class video during the next five to 10 years." <-- in the next 5 years!

Evolution of the White Board

June 13, 2013

I am at INFOCOMM this week, which is the big audio/video show. It is interesting to see the way white boards have evolved.

Clary makes a white board called Icon that is a 32" 60" TV with touch screen, a cart, a camera, speakers, and it runs win7. It is a PC, a TV monitor, a white board, and a video conferencing unit all on wheels.

7 Reasons for Cloud Video

June 10, 2013

I just started a consulting gig with Vidtel for channel sales enablement. It is my first real jump into video. I get to work with Alex Doyle and Scott Wharton, so this is an exciting gig. Off to INFOCOMM tomorrow in Orlando - a week long international conference for all things A/V.
