8x8: The Channel View

I spoke with a sub-agent of 8x8, Tom Palmer, President of Adrena Speed Solutions. Palmer has been selling 8x8 services for a while. He told me about the time (around 2006) when Packet8 was the service brand of 8x8 that had just switched from a residential service to a small business offering. Palmer says it has come a long way since then.

8x8 has hit $100 million in annual revenue, making them one of the top 3 Hosted VoIP providers in the US. I had a chance to interview Debbie Jo Severin, Chief Marketing Officer of 8x8 this week.

My first question was about what kinds of marketing 8x8 does. (I didn't know that the Packet8 brand was no longer in use.)

There is a CRM system that comes with dial-in help (as the Optional VIP Sales Assistant Support of the Gold package). That's right! Salespeople can call in to an assistant that will type in the info and ask for whatever info they need from the CRM system. It's called Landslide and it was just acquired by J2 Global which owns eFax.

Broadsoft Enhances Trunking

Besides the stock price changing, Broadsoft is enhancing SIP trunking.

"BroadSoft, Inc. has announced the release of an enhanced SIP trunking solution, enabling service providers to add unified communications and mobile applications to their SIP trunking offering with speed and ease. With it, service providers can increase the value of their SIP trunks and improve their Average Revenue Per User (ARPU)." [UCSttrategies]

I wonder if they are enhancing SIP licensing as well. One of the big issues for Broadsoft based service providers is the licensing fees, especially the maintenance payments on unused licenses.

8x8 has hit $100 million in annual revenue making them the number 2 hosted VoIP provider (behind Comcast).  8X8 put up some good numbers last quarter.

At $100M, the company has proven that they can organically grow revenue. The churn is coming under control and the company is looking up-market.

It seems that ISP roll-ups just don't last long. Volaris anyone? This story has a Tampa flavor, since KeyOn Communications Holdings Inc., acquired Broadsoft's second customer ever, CommX, in June of 2011 (last year).

No Traction in Hosted PBX Market

According to Insight Research, independent hosted PBX providers should be able to take some small business market share from the Duopoly over the next five years.

The small business market size is more than 40 millions lines, says Robert Rosenberg, INSIGHT Research president. That will mean even more hosted PBX seats since lines and seats are not 1 for 1. "Our study suggests that thus far, small businesses haven't quite latched on to this new technology so the revenue today is only in the range of one-half billion dollars, but by 2015 hosted services will be nearly a $1.2 billion market and the adoption rate of the hosted services by small businesses will accelerate," Rosenberg concluded.

I'm heading to NYC next week to attend Seth Godin's seminar. It is always worth the trip to me. From his Domino Project newsletter today, a little insight:

"It happens to just about every industry, from hard drives to furniture--the insurgents, coming up from the bottom of the market, had an incentive to refine their techniques, engage with their customers and innovate. The incumbents, saddled with much higher costs and less innovation, watched themselves go bankrupt, one by one."
