Yes, Fonality, I am Skeptical (of the VoIP Sector)

February 24, 2017

Apparently, one slightly snarky tweet and a single line item in Tidbits - "A head scratcher: Fonality got bought by Netfortis. Asterisk and Genband." - was annoying to the provider being acquired.

I spoke to five people in the VoIP space familiar with Fonality and none of them had much insight on why this move happened. Well, one answer: scale.

A Quick Look at Emerging Technologies for Next Week

January 31, 2017

Heading into ITEXPO next week, I am prepping for my session on Differentiation for SPs (Marketing) as well as my Women in Tech panel. The week after that I am in Nashville for FISPA speaking on SD-WAN, Marketing Fiber (FTTx) and a couple of other marketing topics. Then I am speaking at a sales kick-off on SD-WAN and more. That's why I want to take a quick run down on emerging technology.

A Big Shift Coming to Telecom

July 5, 2016

Our sector of the marketplace - telecommunications - is about to undergo a change. Yeah, we have been in a shift for a good while, but more is coming.

We went from TDM to VoIP to Hosted PBX to UCaaS to UC&C.

We went from T1 to cable broadband to Gigabit.

The Telecom Long Tails

June 7, 2016

The Telecom Channel Partner Long Tail. 95/5 off-setting Pareto's Principle of 80/20. However, effort and real dollars are spent on the unproductive 95%. That is money and energy that could go into producing partners or marketing.

I talk about what an Aligned Partner is in my Channel Playbook.

In 2006, Alec Saunders and Chris Wood had a discussion about the Voice Long Tail (see here and pdf).

Musings on the Polycom Deal

April 18, 2016

So MITEL is getting bigger by buying Polycom. It had been rumored for weeks and now finally hits the news.

I wonder if Polycom saw the writing on the wall that the battle is going to come down to Microsoft versus Cisco? Motley Fool thinks that is why the OTT ITSP 3Some - 8x8, RC and Vonage - all had a bad day at the stock market.

What Are They Feeding Enterprise?

March 9, 2016

After a 27 hour trip to Enterprise Connect, I can safely say that we have an unqualified me-too business. Video conferencing and collaboration - now called meetings and workflow - were printed on every booth. Here is what I saw.

Cisco demonstrated Spark, which I thought was for SMB, but is being pitched to Enterprise especially with its big hook into Salesforce.

Full Circle: Switch.co Re-Names as Dialpad

March 7, 2016

In 2001, Craig Walker was President of Dialpad. In 2005, Dialpad was acquired by Yahoo, where it went to die. Craig later founded Grand Central and sold that to Google for Google Voice. Then Craig started UberConference, Waitlist.me and Switch.co.

End of Year Summary (Tidbits part 2426)

December 31, 2015

Lots of lists and best of posts out there. I am just going to run through the tidbits that I thought were interesting.

Citrix bought the auto-attendant in the cloud company, Grasshopper, earlier this year for about $161.5 M per 10Q filing. Grasshopper revenue was about $50M if you consider ARPU of $11 and about 350K users.

3 Reasons Most VoIP Providers Will Fail

July 29, 2015

There are about 2000 Hosted VoIP providers in the US (if you include ILECs, CLECs, RLECs and cablecos). They can't all win in the business market for at least 3 reasons.

I talk about Integration all of the time. Why?
