What's With Clearwire?

November 7, 2010

What's up with Clearwire? It started out as a McGraw deal with big investors: Top 5 cable companies, Sprint, Intel and Google. (Did you know that Telesphere's CEO Clark Peterson was President of Clearwire and one of Clearwire's founders?)

Clearwire has about 100 MHz of spectrum pretty much nationwide. That's a huge asset.

FCC and Broadband Growth

November 1, 2010

Trending on my twitter stream is Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) President Karen Kerrigan's op-ed in the Washington Post about net neutrality and the FCC's proposal to impose Internet "reclassification." Basically, she states: FCC Regulations Would Smother Growing Broadband Sector.

There is nothing I like better than FUD.

Not for nothing but the RBOC's have almost given up on DSL anyway.

Besides thinking Cloud, which is really just applications, there have been a few interesting product offerings from carriers. Here are some of them:

XO has almost 100 route miles of new metro fiber in Charlotte (with help from AGL and DukeNet).

What if HP Became an MVNO?

October 1, 2010

All the talk about the Android versus Apple platforms has been interesting, but it leaves out the Blackberry, which actually puts out some rugged, well-liked devices. And there is a sleeper in the corner. That sleeper is HP.

According to the press release today, Sprint just annoounced Wholesale Mobile Integration. Not true. Last October at Broadsoft Connections, Sprint was talking about MVNO options like this. Some Unsettling Numbers

August 24, 2010

"The American economy lost 131,000 net jobs in July, about 70,000 worse than expected.  The loss of 143,000 temporary Census jobs, which was expected by economists, pushed the
"headline" number into the red."  How many jobs have the merged telecom companies dropped?

The INC 5000 list is out with 100 telecom companies on it including many Hosted VoIP companies like Callis Comm., Stage2, VoIP Logic, Telovations, Bandwidth, M5, Aptela, and Geckotech.

Wireless Combo is Merger 3

August 20, 2010

This week has been awash with mergers - the Intel-McAfee merger and the Windstream-Q-Comm merger are the big two. The third interesting merger involves two fixed wireless companies. Airband and Sparkplug announced that they merged and grabbed $20M in financing.

"Fixed-wireless companies Airband Communications and Sparkplug Communications today announced they have merged, creating the largest fixed-wireless company for businesses in the U.S., providing a full suite of voice and data services in 17 markets."
