[replace revenues with taxes and make more sense] What a minute... 80% of Americans support a revenue (aka tax) increase? Even if you take out the 50% of Americans who don't pay income tax, 80% doesn't pass the smell test. Could Obama be lying again?

Further, revenues implies addition to the coffers with no subtraction. Unfortunately, when it comes to "taxes" there is always subtraction. More taxes result in corporations raising taxes, which results in them raising prices, which becomes a tax on every day Americans. Then they have less spending money, which further drags on the economy.

Add to the fact that taxes lead to corporations outsourcing to foreign countries with lower tax rates, further impacting American employment, and you can see why Obama uses the "codeword" 'revenues'. He just doesn't have the backbone to admit he wants to raise taxes on the American people, all the while demagoguing about corporate jet loopholes. Yeah, closing that loophole will surely solve out deficit problems.

If only $1 dollar in taxes resulted in $1 in revenue to the American Treasury. Alas, it is not so simple. $1 dollar in taxes might result in $0.50 in overall revenue or worse, since our economy is teetering on the edge. But Obama refuses to be straight with the American people.

Finally, Obama was the one who said "you don't raise taxes in a recession". He's flip-flopping worse than John Kerry. When does Obama earn his infamous moniker?

    For me, Medicare is not a political talking point. My parents immigrated to the United States in the late 1950s. They worked hard for over 40 years to provide their children the chance to do all the things they themselves could not. But they never made much money.

    As a result, they retired with precious little in savings. Medicare was and is the only way they could access healthcare.

    When my father got sick, Medicare paid for his numerous hospital stays. And as he reached the end of life, Medicare allowed him to die with dignity by paying for his hospice care.

    Like most 80-year-olds, my mother has several age-related ailments. Without the access to quality healthcare that Medicare pays for, I cannot imagine what life would be like for her.

    America needs Medicare. We need it to continue without any benefit reductions for those like my mother currently in the system. And we need it to survive for my generation and my children's generation.

    But Medicare is going bankrupt. Anyone who says it is not is simply lying. And anyone who is in favor of doing nothing to deal with this fact is in favor of bankrupting it. Medicare will go broke in as little as nine years. No one likes this news, but it is the undeniable truth. And the sooner we begin to deal with it, the better off we are all going to be.

    My goals are simple. First, I will not support any plan that changes Medicare for people like my mother who are currently on the plan. We cannot ask seniors to go out and get a job to pay for their healthcare.

    Second, any solution must solve the problem. We need to save Medicare, not simply delay its bankruptcy.

    And third, any solution cannot hurt economic growth. At a time of high unemployment, Americans cannot afford to pay more taxes.

    I will support any serious plan that accomplishes these three things. It does not matter to me if it comes from a Democrat or a Republican. Saving Medicare is more important than partisan politics.

    Rep. Paul Ryan has offered a plan that would make no changes whatsoever for anyone age 55 and older. I support it because, right now, it is the only plan out there that helps save Medicare. Democrats oppose it. Fine. But, if they have a better way to save Medicare, what are they waiting for to show us? What is their plan to save Medicare?

    Either show us how Medicare survives without any changes or show us what changes you propose we make. Anyone who supports doing nothing is a supporter of bankrupting Medicare.

    Where is the House Democrat plan to save Medicare?

    Where is the Senate Democrat plan to save Medicare?

    Where is President Obama's plan to save Medicare?

    They have no plan to save it, and they do not plan to offer one. They have decided that winning their next election is more important than saving Medicare for my mother and retirees like her.

    I have been in the Senate just long enough to be disgusted by the reality that Washington has too many people who think their personal political careers are more important than our country's future.

    Maybe the Democrats' strategy to use Medicare as a political weapon will work. Maybe not offering their own plan to save Medicare will help them win seats in Congress and re-elect President Barack Obama. Maybe it is great for the Democratic Party. But it is terrible for people like my mother, and it is terrible for America.

    Medicare is going bankrupt. If something does not happen soon, in just a few years whoever is in charge in Washington will have to go to people like my mother and tell them we can no longer afford to continue providing her with the same Medicare she is used to.

    We have always had intense partisan politics in America. But throughout our history, on issues of generational importance, our leaders have agreed to put aside politics for the sake of our country. Shouldn't saving Medicare be that kind of issue?

    I am ready to work with anyone in Washington who is serious about saving Medicare. I am open to any serious solutions they have.

It is worth noting one interesting benefit to strong exporters in Europe such as Germany is that a common currency allows them to sell to weaker countries like Greece through subsidized monetary policy. Basically, because of the euro, the Greeks can buy a BMW more inexpensively.

    In other words, Greece consumers benefit from the euro the same way the German manufacturers do. The challenge of course is that Greece does not have as productive an economy, they have more tax evasion than they should and since their currency isn't dropping in value commensurate with their financial situation, they aren't able to boost tourism or the value of their exports.

    The sad reality for Greece and the US is in the following paragraph:

    The only real solutions are for Greece to restructure its debt -- both sovereign and private creditors should take haircuts; abandon the euro and reinstate the drachma; and rethink its welfare state. Like Americans, the Greeks will have to work longer to retire and accept other less generous social benefits, but they could reassert control over their economy.

    Sadly, Democratic politicians - especially those like Howard Dean are attacking the very measures needed to bring the US spending under control in order to prevent a debt-induced implosion in the US. Listen to him speak and twist words below - this interview took place this morning. Rather than admit the federal government is close to broke and none of of our future programs our sustainable when a government is borrowing 40% of every dollar it spends - he attacks responsible people like Paul Ryan. You may remember, Ryan proposed a budget which has the potential to help the US remain solvent and subsequently will protect all government programs. He would be the perfect president for the financial problems this country faces and I really hope he is convinced that he should run.


    Moreover - Dean says many Republicans are haters - of gays, immigrants and anti-Muslim which is just plain untrue - unless you make up your own facts. Then again, many X are haters of Y is a tough statement to disprove - it is a talking point meant to diminish the importance of the message from the political opposition.

    Sadly - in this case the political opposition is warning the country we have a spending problem which is about to cause the nation to go into insolvency if not resolved. President Obama has even agreed with this statement but he seems happy to pass the problem onto an administration in the future. Sadly for US citizens - we have no one to pass the problems onto - we are stuck with them.

    You could call Howard Dean a liar - or just accuse him of omitting the facts but either way it is an example of a smooth-talking politician who doesn't seem to care one bit for his constituents - or the country.

    One last point - can someone - please someone ask Howard Dean, President Obama and/or Nancy Pelosi - in their view just how is the Greek debt crisis different than the US - and what makes them think that if we don't change course we won't end up as screwed as they are - not to mention Portugal, Spain, Ireland and Italy who are also living beyond their means.

    If you see the obvious similarities between the US over-borrowing and what is happening in Europe - attacking budgets which reduce spending would make you fiscally suicidal. And to be honest I am beginning to believe "fiscally suicidal" is the dictionary definition of liberal - I have yet to find one who can reconcile their love of spending and taxing with the reality that there isn't enough money in the country to continue spending the way we are.

Now this is hope and change the fiscally responsible can believe in. While I know little about Cain, I am impressed with his matter of fact style and he seems to resonate with many. As a businessman, I think he would do wonders for the country because he understands what business needs to get the economy going and to start hiring.

    The one challenge is as a non-politician he may not be what America is used to. But if he does become a Republican frontrunner, the choice will be between Four more years of Obama which could certainly plunge the US into what I call a Krugman Death Spiral or the alternative which is fiscally responsible governance not bent on destroying the value of the US dollar.

    What I find most ironic about Obama winning as President is the low income people who saw the man as their savior is directly responsible for the massive spending which has in-turn makes it challenging for these people to have enough money to heat their homes, fill their gas tanks and put food on their tables.

    Conservatives (which are not necessarily Republicans) predicted this happening - you may remember my prior writings about the Weimar Republic and how the money was printed in such vast quantitates it devalued to the point where it was used as wall paper.

    I have written before about how unintended consequences are a problem for all politicians - regardless of party.

    As Reagan said eloquently and correctly, government needs to get out of the way and stop taking away our liberties via massive regulations which kill jobs and hurt the very people they claim to be helping.

    One last point which must be made is I relish the fact that when Herman Cain takes on the fiscally irresponsible - many would say suicidal policies Obama has embarked on with respect the the US Dollar, liberals will be forced to defend their position without relying on cries of racism.

    Let's see if liberal journalists cut Cain the massive slack they cut Obama on point after point.

In the US - the Obama administration in partnership with Pelosi, Reid and liberal Democrats are not only modeling US policy on Europe they are trying to get to insolvency first. Paul Krugman of the New York Times is the biggest proponent in the media of spending well beyond our means and many use his writings as cover to behave financially in a way they wouldn't and can't in their personal or corporate lives.

    I hope those who believe in fiscal responsibility and hope to leave a better country to their children will join me in utilizing the new and infinitely accurate term "Krugman Death Spiral" when referring to any country which spends beyond its means and subsequently spirals downward.

    He explains Obama’s populist rhetoric is carefully designed to hide the truth

    This week I discussed why US politicians are more responsible for job losses than the iPad as some politicians would suggest. But today I thought it made great sense to explain what one of the most successful US businesspersons and employers has to say about the current political environment and moreover, how it is hurting US workers. Steve Wynn was on the Neil Cavuto show last night and in a no-nonsense style he explained how Obamacare is directly hurting his employees through higher copays they now must make.

    He continues to explain how the living standard of working people is deteriorating materially because of government policies and he cites inflation and the rising prices for items at Wal-Mart as an example.

    He continues to explain that the more accurate term for what Obama does in his speeches is not “being disingenuous” but instead “lying.” He goes on –to say when the President Obama says millionaires and billionaires should pay their fair share – he doesn’t mention the vast majority of US small businesses pay taxes as individuals meaning if such an entity was to make $4-$5M, they deduct their living expenses and take what’s left and open another store or factory. And this of course means more hiring.

    Moreover, 20% or more of these profits are tied up in inventory or receivables meaning these people really didn’t have the money to begin with.

    He continues to say if you want to lie and misrepresent, you’ll call them millionaires and billionaires but these people are the job engine of America.

    Another major point is that he is giving raises to his employees but their standard of living is decreasing. In other words, the policies being pushed by the Obama administration are hurting workers today – the argument isn’t about the next generation or the following one – the problems being created hurt us all this minute.

    Moreover, he adds the point that people seem to be transfixed talking about what the government is giving us but what is not discussed is what the government is taking away. By this he means the quality of life is being deteriorated in real-time because of the falling value of the dollar.

    Perhaps most important and an argument I hear more and more by people who just can’t stand to hear the President as he has begun his campaign for 2012 is “The populist rhetoric is carefully designed to hide the truth.”

    In closing he says he would be very happy to debate anyone who has the gumption to stand up and tell the truth which may mean we can expect Steve Wynn to run for office. The video above is a must watch for everyone.

    America is slowly waking up to this political trick and its why I think this ad promoting Mitch Daniels for President is very effective. Not because I don't believe everyone in society doesn't deserve to have a great life - but because I believe individuals and corporations and a free market system with minimal government intrusion and regulation are the best path to helping the most people while keeping them motivated to be productive as the US competes in a global economy.

Personally, I would add university professors into the mix.

    As Prager points out, the recent Arizona shooting shows the left will routinely lie about the right and change the subject when caught. Those people who watch the media objectively see the reality before their eyes and it seems finally, others are learning about how a newspaper like the New York Times uses its elevated position to assign blame to the right whenever possible - especially it seems when unwarranted.

    Finally, with talk radio, the Internet and new stations like Fox News - the fastest growing news network in the country, the public is able to see ALL sides of the issues and make up their own minds.]]> Tags: , , , , , , , Related tags: ,

    I am not a financial expert nor am I an economist – but considering they all have missed virtually every significant financial event from the dotcom bubble to the telecom bubble and the housing bubble let’s just say not being an economist or financial expert probably is a distinct advantage.

    Having said this, I would like to discuss a few issues which need to be out in the open and discussed before the new Congress begins.

    Bank runs are bad

    Banks do not keep all of their assets in cash meaning if the majority of a bank’s customers decide to withdraw all of their money at the same time, the bank collapses. Think about it – they loan much of the money they have to others and don’t have access to it all. When one bank collapses there is a chance other investors will get spooked and create a cascade of bank failures. When not stopped, you have the potential for another Great Depression.

    Bank runs are currently stoppable because governments can stop them

    To date, bank runs have been stopped because governments around the world have been able to stop them by assuming the bad loans the banks have made.

    Soon, global governments may not be able to stop the bank runs
    With all the debt global governments have amassed, there is a possibility at some point that investors will start a global bank run meaning county after country will see their banks collapse because the confidence in the ability of a country to pay back its debt has plummeted.

    Ireland may kick off a worldwide panic

    If you follow financial news you may know much of Europe is in trouble because in general they work less hours than they should and produce far less than they need to in order to sustain the lifestyle they live. Moreover, we all know a typical worker in China could work 50% longer hours in far worse conditions for a small fraction of the wages seen in Europe and elsewhere such as the US. How can this be sustainable? It obviously can’t. To make matters worse, retired Europeans and many Americans enjoy pensions which are not sustainable and financially suicidal. For sure, this situation is a recipe for bankruptcy at the country/state/federal level. That is the best case – global riots are the worst case.

    Please stop the entitlements and other useless spending

    All entitlements and government spending needs to be slashed in the US. Many of our newly elected politicians were sent to represent the American people who believe in being fiscally conservative in order to allow our children to have the same or similar opportunities that we have had in the US.

    The US needs to be a safe haven and not part of a global financial meltdown (again)

    Watching a cascading financial meltdown due in large part to progressive Republicans and Democrats irresponsibly raiding the US treasury is something we will no longer tolerate.

    And frankly, the RINOs (Republicans in Name Only), liberals, progressives and Democrats who believe we need to tax and spend our way out of every problem better understand those days are over.

    The American public was woken up and is watching Europe very closely. Virtually every fundamental transformation taking place here in the US which is changing us into a socialist/statist political system needs to be undone and we need to go back to our roots as a conservative democratic republic with limited federal powers and far greater rights at the local level.

People don't have time for all the analysis he says so they gouge their opinion based on what MSNBC or Fox news says about a particular situation - like a new Supreme Court Justice nominee.

    The idea according to Kramer is less time = less patience to do the homework ourselves and we allow others to do it for us instead.

    While I am no expert on MSNBC - I watch it only occasionally, it is worth pointing out that Fox News makes a major effort to present all sides to a  story.

    O'Reilly in particular has pivoted to the center-right since Glenn Beck's popularity started to soar. Bill has many guests on the left and debates them on the merits time and time again. You can see him occasionally biting his tongue as he is generally pretty conservative but seems to go out of his way each night to ensure he is "fair and balanced" as the slogan says.

    Other areas to note are that Fox has a visually appealing lineup of hosts and a great viewing experience as opposed to most other news stations.

    One last point is consistency - the anchors and programming on Fox News have been there for many years and this allows viewers to build loyalty with the line-up.]]> Tags: , , , , , , , Related tags:
