Today is Christmas Eve and you will no doubt hesitate or think about how to wish someone well. Corporate cards have gone out and most will have said Happy Holidays or Season's Greetings. I am fine with that and usually change my signature line to reflect the same.

Why?

Because my business associates are a mixed lot and no single greeting other than a general wish of good fortune and joy will work. However, when I know the person well, I do replace the signature with Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah. In those cases, I have both a personal and professional with the recipient.

Am I reducing the "reason for the season?" I don't think so. It is often stated that cultures around the world celebrated the winter solstice, which then served as a cover for various persecuted religions groups to celebrate surreptitiously. Therefore, the date is multifunctional and celebrated by diverse groups. I love that we experience more kindness, giving and goodwill during this time of year. We reflect about our family, friends and those less fortunate than ourselves. It gives us a chance to renew both as individuals and as a society.

I enjoy this time of year. I go out of my way to do something that will make another smile. This month as I rushed to work, I stopped and picked up three stray dogs (a pair of black labs and one feisty little terrier). While one owner didn't even say thank you after I waited fifteen minutes for her to retrieve her wayward Labs, the other offered such thanks and noted how her little girl was crying they would never see Gemini again. For me, I felt good after each event. I know the dogs were a lot happier getting home quickly. By the way, I think the terrier was feisty because he only knew Spanish and I only spoke to him in English!

Let's enjoy this season whether you celebrate it by saying Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Season's Greetings, Happy Kwanzaa...
