Croissant Bread Pudding and Bread for LTE...

I had planned to share a salmon recipe with you today but I made a bread pudding yesterday that was my best yet. I first tried using croissants as the base for bread pudding a few years ago. Using bread as tasty as this is hard to beat. There are lots of other choices as well but the croissants not only taste good they look great as well. Previously I have made this mixing white chocolate with the bread, and others have used raisins. The idea of using a preserve seemed very fresh and delicious. It was indeed both. The Croissant Bread Pudding is very easy to make and a great dessert for a group. As always, the bread will soak up more of the custard if it is a day or two old. In this case, I bought the croissants Sunday morning and let them sit out for a few hours.

I will share the Salmon recipe next week. It is one of my favorites as well. Look for Salmon with a Vodka Cream Sauce next week. I serve this over fettuccine.

LTE...

I intentionally did not explain what this was last week because I felt it deserved its own day in the sun. Long Term Evolution (LTE) is a 3G initiative to improve the UMTS mobile phone standard. The idea is to update mobile communications to support future applications and technologies. It will support peak download rates of 326.4 Mbit/s and upload rates of 86.4 Mbit/s (ultimately, gigabit rates will be supported), and will be based upon TCP/IP.. Therefore, LTE is the means by which mobile communications will use Internet Protocol to support voice, data, video and messaging applications. LTE will enable mobile to become part of the ITSP/Broadvox ecosystem. Although begun as a 3G project, implementations are being referred to as 4G.

For those of you in Dallas, Verizon's recent announcement to use Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson is good news. Both companies still employ several thousand North Texans and having been selected to provide the equipment to roll out the network trials in 2009 in two unnamed cities. Further good fortune would be for Dallas to be one of the selected cities.

The size of the deal was not revealed by Verizon. The amount Verizon is willing to spend on LTE in 2009, will be of interest to many. With CAPEX being reduced by most carriers and enterprises, this spending will indicate the strategic value Verizon is placing on LTE.
