Interviewing for a Double Chocolate Ice Cream

I can't believe I missed two entries of blogs, especially when I had subjects to discussed. But first the weekend's food. My godson, Taylor, and goddaughter, Mackenzie, came to spend the week on Friday. The twins have been a part of life since their birth and to celebrate their arrival I had a BBQ on Sunday. Foe the BBQ we had smoked brisket and ribs, grilled Cornish game hens, potato salad, pinto beans, coleslaw, and mixed vegetables. For dessert I made lemon ice cream, French vanilla and chocolate ice cream with chopped peanut butter cups. The brisket was my best by far. Using the new smoke I cooked it for about 16 hours, it weighed 26 pounds before cooking. I smoked the brisket with hickory and the ribs with apple.  I considered using pecan or mesquite for the ribs but having never used apple, I thought it was worth a try. They were very good as well. My wife made the vegetable dishes. It was all good, but picking the recipe of the week was easy, I chose the Chocolate Ice Cream.  Last year I shared my basic vanilla ice cream recipe. This year you get the basic chocolate ice cream. Be imaginative and mix in chipped chocolate, cherries, pecans, or as I did, peanut butter cups. Enjoy!

Interviewing...

With accelerating growth of VoIP/SIP Trunking, Broadvox has had to expand all areas of our business. This means hiring a variety of people. Hiring is the fun part, interviewing is the hard part. I am not your typical hiring manager in that I seldom ask any of the following questions:

·         What are your weaknesses?

·         What are your strengths?

·         What was your greatest challenge?

·         What was your biggest accomplishment?

I prefer to get a candidate talking about him or herself. The range of responses to the simple statement of "tell me about yourself?" gives me an insight into how people plan to engage. Most answer with a question, "What do you want to know?" I usually keep my cards close by answering, "Whatever you want to tell me." Too often, it ends up being a regurgitation of their resume but every now and again, I get a refreshing response. I also, like to hear about their understanding of our industry and what research they have done on the company and, of course, me. I believe that being prepared to discuss yourself, your potential company and your potential manager, tells me much about how you are going to address your daily work responsibilities.

Telecommunications is often described as a small community. If that is true then, IP communications is a very small community. As we grow, we need to add carefully to that community to maintain our rich history and position for the future.

By the way, if you know of a good sales engineer in the Dallas area, tell him or her I am hiring.
