Ten Wonderful More Days

December 21, 2011

This is my last blog of the year and rather than throw more statistics at you I decided to offer some end of year thoughts. I considered writing about the benefits of working from home, or the growth experienced by MagicJack, or the end of the merger of AT&T and T-Mobile, but none of them seem to be year ending types of stories. Instead, I will offer some brief musings.

Broadvox began the year by acquiring Cypress Communications and ended the year integrating most of its organizational business units.

Forecasting Chicken, Steak and Fairness

December 19, 2011

Last week was an exploration of chicken. I purchased three chicken breasts and decided to create a different chicken dish for three consecutive nights (all three breasts were brined for 24 hours in water, salt and lemon juice, rinsed and returned to the refrigerator). The first night was a stuffed on the bone chicken breast. The stuffing consisted of sautéed chopped trumpet mushrooms and garlic which was added to a mixture of lebni, chopped spinach, chopped slivered almonds, marjoram, parmesan cheese, salt and pepper.

Video Conferencing: an Arrow for the UC Quiver

December 16, 2011

Time after time analysts have incorrectly forecasted the seminal event for creating major pull for video conferencing. Earlier, this year, I indicated that the sales and growth trend for the market seems to be on the right path. Video conferencing solutions for the desktop are very inexpensive to acquire, simple to install and fairly effective as a communications tool. Moreover, solutions for the office can be had for thousands of dollars versus tens of thousands of dollars.

A Not So Weighty Issue

December 14, 2011

First, I want to remind you that we have understood energy to have mass or weight for years. E=mc2 is the currently accepted truth of that. Professor John Kubiatowicz, a computer scientist at the University of California, Berkeley, noted that storing new data involves holding electrons in a fixed place in the device's memory. And that keeping those electrons still takes energy, approximately one billionth of a microjoule per bit of data.

Pancakes and Panned

December 12, 2011

Last week was interesting for foods fixed during the week. I made pan roasted chicken with a creamy Boursin cheese sauce and chicken and dumplings. The first is a dish that has been in my repertoire for over two decades, thoroughly enjoyable. The second is one that continues to evade perfection.

Do You Want SIP Trunks with That?

December 9, 2011

Apparently, since the merger of Broadvox and Cypress Communications, I have written more blogs on Unified Communications than SIP Trunking. I was a bit surprised but shouldn’t have been. Unified Communications (UC) does not require SIP Trunking. In addition to Cypress, other companies like ShoreTel have touted UC without including SIP Trunks.

Business Ready VoIP: Cable vs. Wireline

December 7, 2011

I have been down on cable for months as a “business ready” connection. The fluctuating quality of cable services and the lack of predictability of the upload and downloads speeds made using a cable service for business very risky. That’s right, I used the word “made”. Cable service for business VoIP and cloud-based applications is improving.

Truly Converged Access...

December 5, 2011

Sometimes I think I should create a food diary to remember everything I cook. Not just the recipes but each idea for a new dish. Friday I made croque monsieurs with wavy/ridged French fries using a mandolin. I made them the way I first had them in Sweden, open faced with lots of cheese.

Youth, Money and Mobility

December 2, 2011

Yesterday, during lunch the subject of checks was raised and we discovered that one among us had never written a check. Not too surprising, he was also the youngest of the seven of us. In order to transact financially, he uses cash, debit and credit cards, and electronic banking. As he was peppered with questions about how he paid for various items, I thought back to when I stopped carrying a check book and the last time I voluntarily wrote a check.
