How do You Wireless?

April 27, 2012

Earlier this week the astounding numbers regarding Apple’s iPhone and iPad sales created a surge in their market cap moving the stock from $560 per share to $610 in twenty four hours. Also, benefiting from the sales of these products were Verizon and AT&T although actual activations were down quarter over quarter. It seems the only carrier to actually see their subscriber base grow as a result of iPhones sales was Sprint. However, the increase did not improve their revenue side of the ledger.

You're Fired

That’s right! “We regret to inform you that your position with the company has been eliminated. Please pack your belongings and leave the building immediately.” Okay, I exaggerate, the actual message was “I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and wish you all the best for the future.” Except it wasn’t true. Someone in the Aviva Human Resources department sent the goodbye email to the entire company rather than the one person for whom it was destined.

Have a COW, Man!

This is my favorite time of year in Dallas with the fall second. The reason is simple. Sunny weather and we can be outside to enjoy it. Summer in Texas can be brutal with 100 degree days quite common.

A few months ago I read a comment regarding worker productivity improvement when given a second monitor. I must admit that I didn’t give it any real thought since I have utilized dual monitors for some time. However, in my quest to provide you with the best information available I looked into the claims. On the high side there are proponents of dual monitors that claim a 50% improvement in productivity.

A Couple of Cheesy Thoughts

April 16, 2012

What started as a slow weekend for cooking (pizza delivery on Friday) picked up on Saturday and Sunday. Breakfast Saturday was potato pancakes with Havarti cheese and eggs sunny-side up. The pancakes were made from leftover mashed potatoes, flour, baking powder, cheese and an egg. I got the idea for the pancake as soon as I saw the mashed potatoes made by my wife.

Triple Digit Growth

SIP Trunking service revenue jumped 128% globally in 2011 according to Infonetics. Businesses want to embrace VoIP but they want the business ready features and applications associated with SIP. In the survey conducted by Infonetics businesses cited flexibility, centralization of resources and cost effective voice connectivity along with the surging popularity of hosted VoIP and UC services. So, as I often ask, why are you still thinking about joining this transformation in how businesses communicate?

If that isn’t enough for you to pursue new prospects and engage your existing customers to migrate to VoIP and SIP Trunking then note, the demand for VoIP is growing at nearly 16.6% CAGR according to TechNavio.

A Taxing Decision

April 11, 2012

Years ago, a mentor told me to do my own taxes as long as possible. In doing so, he explained I would have an understanding of tax policy that exceeded most people. This would allow for better tax and investment planning and, perhaps, better political decisions. So, rather than use H&R Block, I read the IRS forms and booklets.

Sweeeet!

April 9, 2012

Although spring officially began March 20th, I always view Easter weekend as symbolizing the true start of spring. In addition to the religious symbols for rebirth, it is also the weekend when the egg or birth in general is celebrated. I made only one egg dish, cheesy scrambled eggs nestled on a woven mat of bacon on sourdough toast. But I did think of spring and rebirth as I made it.

Can You Access Me Now?

April 6, 2012

In the debate over the availability of broadband and the underserved portions of our country, wireless does not seem to be an important variable. Yet, as CTIA reported, there are more wireless subscriptions than people in the U.S. (322,800,000 vs. 312,781,000) and more than half of those subscribers have smartphones.

If Only Dorothy had a Smartphone

Yesterday was certainly interesting for the Dallas Broadvox office. We had our first visit by our new CEO, Bruce Chatterley, and the first evacuation of the office. In case you missed the news, the north Texas was hit by powerful thunderstorms yesterday which spawned several tornadoes. A few of these were on target to strike central Dallas and, ultimately, we were told to leave our offices and seek shelter in the subterranean parking garage.

Cheeky and Cool

April 2, 2012

The menu for the weekend was greatly influenced by my decision to make an updated version of pasta carbonara. Therefore, I could be less creative in cooking or so I thought. Friday’s dinner was coconut shrimp and panko crusted shrimp (yes, both). Saturday began with a shrimp omelette garnished with toasted coconut.
