The Value of the Cloud Hits New Highs

Cloud Computing ValueAs an industry, we have focused our discussion of trending data along the lines of customer adoption of various cloud services and applications. However, a complete view of the value of the cloud also includes understanding the growing value of companies that provide cloud platforms, applications and services.

According to the Bessemer Venture Partners (BVP) the market value of the top players in cloud computing has crossed $100 billion. BVP released the following quote, “With 30 large public companies collectively representing more than $100 billion in market capitalization and $12.5 billion in estimated 2013 revenue, the cloud computing industry has officially come of age.” In reaction to the growth, the venture group has released the “BVP Cloud Computing Index. Tracking the weekly fluctuations of this market will allow for comparisons against the better known Dow, S&P 500, and NASDAQ. This will be of assistance to those participating in the stock markets, private equity investors and M&A activity.

Although crossing the milestone of $100 billion in market value is exciting, the potential growth is even more impressive. Per Gartner Research, given the broadest definition of the cloud computing, the current annual spend is $30 billion of a $1.4 trillion market. The definition of which includes annual software, datacenter and all IT spending. Consequently, cloud computing sales represent only 2% of SMB and enterprise spending but with double digit annual growth rates it garners more and more attention.

BVP is offering itself up as a key source of information on the 30 largest/highest valued public cloud computing companies. BVP is providing updated public comps, operating metrics, and forecasts for download on a weekly basis via the BVP Cloud Comp Sheets. In reviewing the list I noted BroadSoft, Concur Technologies, LinkedIn, Salesforce and NetSuite, all companies I have either used or followed in the past.

ANPI and other hosted communications service providers can benefit from the value cloud computing brings to our shareholders but our primary purpose is to improve the productivity, revenue potential and overall communications of our customers and prospects.

It’s good that there is validation by the financial community for pursuing cloud computing and unified communications but, heck, the IP community knew it all along.
