Attorneys General: Vonage Must Be Clearer on E911 Limits

December 18, 2006
Vonage has struck up a deal with the Attorneys General of six U.S. states to, in essence, sign up all new customers with E911 service and transmit the physical addresses of those members to their nearest emergency responder agencies as part of the sign-up process.

The arrangement was fueled by a perception that Vonage has not been aggressive enough in telling new customers about the limitations and requirements of E911.

One particular issue that pushed the deal toward completion was that Vonage had not been telling new subscribers that they need to inform emergency responder agencies of their new physical address should that change.

"Consumers need to know about problems that could slow down emergency response time," said North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper.

Participating states- North Carolina, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts Michigan and Texas- are to collect $500,000 from Vonage for the cost of the inquiry.
