RIAA Fires Up The Old Litigation Machine Again- 411 College Students Targeted

October 19, 2007

The Recording Industry Association of America has sent "prelitigation" letters to 19 U.S. universities, warning that students at each of these institutions have been using campus networks to commit copyright infringement.

Some 411 letters are going out to individual students.

The letters also state that lawsuits are being prepared against these students, and that these students might want to settle out of court at a discounted rate.

A copy of one such letter, posted on the website of technology-in-education advocacy site Educause, offers a student (with name redacted) 20 days to contact the RIAA and settle for an amount significantly less than they would have to pay if they do not make contact and settle within that time.

The RIAA has set up a website where, it says, settlements can be made online.
