Sony BMG Settles With California Attorneys General Over DRM PC Harm

December 20, 2006

The Attorneys General of the state of California and of Los Angeles County have reached a deal with Sony BMG that requires the music conglomerate to pay $750,000 in penalities and costs related to the purported harm that digital rights management software included in Sony CDs caused PCs.

This settlement includes refunds of up to $175 where California consumers can describe and document specific damanage to their PCs.

More such actions are coming. Los Angeles County deputy district attorney Tom Papageorge said Texas filed a similar agreement yesterday. Papageorge added his belief that other states, and possible the Federal Trade Commission,  likely will follow suit.
