Battle Lines Drawn in FCC Spectrum Auction

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission held an open meeting earlier today to outline its plans for auctioning off airwave spectrum that television broadcasters will no longer require after they switch to digital in ealry 2009. need after the switch to digital in early 2009.

Reuters reports there are "a number of companies and groups keen to grab some of the airwaves in the 700 megahertz band."

Meanwhile, consumer groups are demanding that the FCC to take steps to increase competition in the auction.

For example, On Public Knowledge's blog, PK president Gigi Sohn calls the auction "the most valuable spectrum auction we have yet seen, and likely the last significant auction in our lifetimes," and she outlines her organization's position on auction.
