FCC's December 18 Meeting Will Encompass A Whole Host of Topics

December 12, 2007

In its Dec. 18 public meeting, theFCC will consider whether or not to loosen newspaper-broadcast ownership rules now in effect.

Current regulations severely limit media ownership groups holding a majority interest in both a television station and newspaper in the same metro market. Yet since so many television ownership groups have consolidated, newspapers in the U.S. are considered hurting, and additional news sources such as the Internet have thrived since the issue was last debated, FCC Chair Kevin Martin believes these rules should be loosened.

It's also widely assumed that during hearing the FCC will give their nod to a a 30% cap on cable's household reach and open an inquiry into vertical concentration limits, as well as discuss proposals about how the regulatory body can encourage broadcasters to identify products where a fee has been exchanged in order to work their products into show plot lines.

The meeting is the last of the year for the FCC. It will start at 10:30 a.m., and promises to be a long one.
