Teacher Convicted On Classroom Porn Charges Gets New Trial
Allegedly pornographic pop-up ads form the crux of a case involving a former substitute teacher in New London, Connecticut, who is appealing a conviction of allowing students to view pornography over a classroom computer.
The teacher, Julie Amero, had been convicted of allowing this to happen, and is facing a 40-year sentence.
Yesterday, however, Amero's defense counsel won their appeal for a new trial. Prosecutors did not object.
This appeal for a new trial was apparently energized happened once evidence was obtained after the computer in question was sent to a state crime lab had pointed to an apparently unintentional appearance of these pop-ups.
"Amero and her supporters say the old computer, which she was ordered to leave on, lacked firewall or antispyware protections to prevent inappropriate pop-ups," reports Stephanie Reitz of the Associated Press.
"The lesson from this is all of us are subject to the whims of these computers," Amaro's attorney William F. Dow told reporters after the hearing.
