Congressman to Comcast: Quit Blocking BitTorrent Traffic

October 26, 2007

U.S. Congressman Rick Boucher, a Democrat from Virginia who is a highly influential force in telecommunications policy legislation, issed a state, emt earlier this week calling on high-speed Internet service provider Comcast to stop blocking and thwarting BitTorrent traffic.

According to tech news and gossip site Valleywag, Rep. Baucher's statement said in part:

Comcast has made a major mistake in attemptig to hinder peer-to-peer file sharing as an aspect of its network management. The inability of customers to [share files] significantly diminishes their ability to utilize the Internet for one of its most important applications, which is user-to-user content.

Interesting to note that  Rep. Baucher is not a net neutrality proponent. He believes in market-based solutions, and failing that, enforcement on specifically egregious action such as the Comcast traffic-thwarting arguably is.
