Paramount Pictures files suit for DMCA , copyright violations

November 17, 2006

Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom, has sued retailer Load 'N Go Video for a consumer service they offer in which they load DVDs onto iPods and other personal media players.

Paramount says because this service is, in effect, a DVD rip, this is illegal under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and also constitutes copyright infringement.

The Electronic Frontier Fundation, blessed be them, is not happy about this.

"Although this lawsuit happens to be aimed at Load 'N Go, the DMCA theory in the complaint makes it crystal clear that the MPAA believes it is just as illegal for you to do the same thing for yourself at home," the EFF comments on their website. "Apparently, Hollywood believes that you should have to re-purchase all your DVD movies a second time if you want to watch them on your iPod."
