As Licensing Agreements Expire Today, Nokia, Qualcomm Escalate Patent War
Patent licensing agreements between mobile device chip maker Qualcomm and cellphone company Nokia are set to expire today.
That milestone has become a millstone- at least legally.
With two more patent infringement lawsuits filed by Qualcomm against Nokia earlier this month, that makes four.
Thelatest jousts are over downloading technology over GPRS/EDGE networks, as well as a dispute about speech encoder technologies.
Qualcomm has filed another two patent infringement suits on handset and infrastructure maker Nokia, this time claiming Nokia is absconding with intellectual property related to the downloading over GPRS/EDGE networks and speech encoder technologies.
The digital content downloading suit is being heard in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas while the vocoder case is being heard in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin.
The anomosity seems to be going both ways. Nokia has filed a total of two suits against Qualcomm in Germany and in the Netherlands.
