Fluke Networks Joins Metro Ethernet Forum: And Why This Is Important
Odds are not all that high you have heard of Fluke Networks.
Served-on-a-platter-puns aside, this company is one of technology's major, enabling players. I first became aware of them way back in 2001 (remember when 2001 was "the future?) while I researched my book on wireless networking.
Among several other endeavors, Fluke made, and makes, testing and measuring equipment used by enterprises, engineers and developers to plan on-premise networks. Think "site survey"- as in the network architecture sense- and Fluke should come to mind.
But more than that, Fluke is a leading supplier of Ehernet equipment to carriers.
The reason for this long preamble is to underscore how important today's news is.
The news, that is, that Fluke Networks ,announced today that it has joined the Metro Ethernet Forum.
The 140-member MEF's mission is to accelerate the worldwide adoption of Carrier-class Ethernet networks and services. The MEF develops Carrier Ethernet technical specifications and implementation agreements to promote interoperability and deployment of Carrier Ethernet worldwide.
"With the number of Ethernet circuits growing at such dramatic rates, it is critical that carriers are ready to support them", said Nan Chen, President of the MEF. "Fluke Networks' experience in Ethernet testing will help the MEF continue to develop methods and procedures that will enable carriers to do so and enhance the confidence of customers in Ethernet solutions."
In a statement released today Fluke said MEF Membership will allow the telecommunications industry to benefit from its knowledge and experience in establishing practical, technically sound industry standards.
In a closely related development, Fluke Networks notes that it recently introduced its first tool specifically designed to support carrier Ethernet deployment, the MetroScope carrier Ethernet analyzer. This new portable analysis and troubleshooting tool offers savings of up to 40% for service providers deploying carrier Ethernet services.
