Simple Steak and Simpler Software

There is nothing better than a great grilled steak during the summer months. Oh what the heck, there is nothing better than a great grilled steak any time of year. A great steak requires two things. A good cut of meat and good seasoning. I prefer either choice or prime cuts of either porterhouse, New York and Kansas City Strips or Filet Mignon. Do your best to avoid any other meat labels like select, reserved, silver, etc. Unless you know the butcher, pass on ungraded beef. The differences in the grades of meat are the price and the amount of marbling. Prime is the most expensive with the most marbling. Choice is a good compromise for price and marbling. By the way, just because beef comes from   Angus cattle does not mean it is choice or prime. Angus can also be the lower select grade. Look for the grade designations when buying beef. Grilled Porterhouse Steak is the recipe for today and yes, I know most of you will not consider it worthwhile as a recipe. However, look at what I do to make even a steak extra special with two to three days of aging and a very good seasoning mixture. You can apply this recipe to any good steak. So, to all you carnivores out there, enjoy Grilled Porterhouse Steak.

Open Source Software

Open source software is a sensitive subject in that it threatens to change the business model for many high tech companies. Recently, an open source company approached us about providing free phone service. After all, they provided their software solution at no cost to all. Moreover, in the future IP Communications may become free or essentially free and I'll discuss that later in the week. Broadvox is using, developing and exploring open source software on multiple fronts. We use an open source platform for our Customer Relationship Management (CRM) solution. This allows us to gain certain features out of the box and develop/customize the software to fit our specific company needs.  We are also looking to open source software to improve our other OSS in the areas of provisioning and number portability. We released updates to both of these systems in the last thirty days shortening our time to provision and improving the communications between different departments. We are also researching open source software for various network features. I can't go too much into that, as it is part of a strategic effort. I mention it only to further demonstrate that AT&T Labs does not have a lock on telecom R&D.

Wednesday will be a short column as Broadvox will be exhibiting and speaking at IT Expo. However, we'll discuss peering on Wednesday and Friday.
