IDT uses Wi-Fi to offer cheaper cell service By Paul Davidson, USA TODAY Believe it or not, 43% of U.S. consumers still don't have a cell phone — many for budget reasons. Video has been done, Telephony has been done but neither have been done very well using SIP as the underpinning until just recently. A few softphone companies will soon have a Video softphone, abiding by open standards using H.263 & H.264 codecs with SIP for signalling. Video is quicking becoming all the rage in the SIP world, watch it explode in 2005.
A few years back Dialpad launched a free PC-to-Phone service inbound to anywhere in the US. This offering attracted more than 14 Million users. Today Dialpad still does millions of minutes per month and they have long since killed the free calling to the US model. Terracall among others are now offering free inbound calling to the USA in hopes of attracting paying customers. The tactic has worked in the past, there is no reason it will not work again. SIP has greatly contributed to VoIP and IP Communications in general to a degree that few truly appreciate. It has simplified the implementation of new technologies that make deployments faster and more efficient. It is the next level in SIP implementation. The working group is lead by an industry veteran and the participants are well know in the telephony and SIP community. Wow! I have never seen a buzz like that at a trade in my life. Xten closed 4 deals and partnered with some very large companies, something I was not expecting. Xten will be exhibiting in Boston as a result. The Pulver Party with Liz Phair was great too, packed venue and high spirits.
