P2P VoIP & Open Standards

We are starting to see some progress with a few proposed P2P VoIP drafts in the IETF. It will probably take several months but there will be a standard here and that is good news! With Skype's seemingly immense popularity the business case for P2P VoIP has been already been introduced, albeit nothing new. When we take that model and apply it using Open Standards like SIP [Session Initiation Protocol] the doors fling wide open. Imagine all of the islands of communication you are used to, e.g. IM, Voice, Video.. all coming together under one roof and a great deal of it is what some would call free! It's coming, sooner than you think and some of those solutions will be using the Xten eyeBeam SDK to do it! Keep your ears to the rails, the trains'a cominsmile

Consolidating Telcos

SBC buys AT&T, Qwest submits offer to buy MCI and now Verizon is apparently looking at MCI as well. What does it all mean? It certainly means there is change ahead for all communications sectors. VoIP, IP Videoconferencing, & IM are having a serious impact on how the new markets are being shaped and what features the end users are expecting. Mobile IP communications offerings and residential triple-plays using devices like set-top boxes will deliver VoIP, IP Video, IP Videoconferencing, Presence and IM everywhere we go. The telco M&A activity is an indication that the stage is being set for a real revolution in communications. It's about timewink

VoIP & WiFi

Hmm, you have to wonder if these stand alone VoWLAN phones will grow the legs required before 3G hits. If we are getting 200-400 Kbps on a mobile phone, PDA and alike who will want to cart around yet another device to get the same service? I have toted my fair share of devices around and I can safely say, unless it's small enough and does it all, I ain’t interested. Give me a Dual mode Pocket PC / GSM device with a SIP softphone anyday.
