Justin Bieber and Social Media

November 30, 2012

Last night I went to the Justin Bieber concert in Madison Square Garden. (Yes, I am a Belieber.) The two nights in the Big Apple sold out in 30 seconds when tickets went on sale earlier this year, and his entire Believe tour sold out in just an hour. Pretty impressive for an eighteen-year-old. This is worth noting for two reasons.

Social Networking is Up, Socializing in Person is Down

November 29, 2012

An infographic posted on Socially Aware, a Morrison & Foerster blog devoted to the law and business of social media, highlights the growing impact of social media. The infographic shows that social media accounts for 18 percent of time spent online -- the average time Americans spend on social networking has more than doubled, going up from 2.7 hours in 2006 to 6.9 hours in 2011, and socializing in person has gone down from 22.8 hours in 2006 to 21 hours in 2011.

Not surprisingly, Facebook remains at the top of social networks visited with the average time visitors spend on the site per month at 6.75 hours. Tumblr and Pinterest are tied for second place with 1.5 hours per month, followed by Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+.

November 19, 2012

Election night is two weeks behind us, but Laura Olin, a social media strategist for the Obama campaign, has just opened up about what it’s like to be the voice of the President online. Election night not only made history for declaring Barack Obama’s second term in the White House, but it made social media history as well.

The tweet, “Four more years,” accompanied by a photo of the first couple hugging, has received more than 816,800 tweets and 298,700 favorites. The same photo was uploaded to Facebook and also bashed records.
