By Daniel Berninger, CEO, FWD, dan@danielberninger
The gap in voice quality between a telephone call and meeting in-person has not decreased since the 1930's. This fact is no less surprising than had a iPhone dropped from the sky as the Bell Laboratories researchers made the decisions establishing 300Hz to 3300Hz as the network frequency response 80 years ago. It does not seem unreasonable to wonder why voice networks remain constrained by a technology decision made a decade before the invention of the transistor.

Telephone voice quality impairments have the same effect as a hearing impairment. Telephone network voice quality limitations are telephone hearing disabilities. The typical telephone connection gives callers the same hearing impairment as the one suffered by the typical 70 year old construction worker in the loss of the frequencies above 4000Hz associated with consonant sounds. Even the retired construction worker will hear more of the frequencies below 500Hz, essential for recognizing voices and establishing an emotional connection, than people using telephones.

Asserting telephone call quality is "good enough" falls into the same denial category as the refusal to wear a hearing aid. A telephone conversation serves the exact same purpose as a conversation in-person. Hearing and voice quality impairments destroy the ability to communicate - understanding. The proliferation of the word "what?"

and adaptations callers apply speak for themselves. No one feels compelled to use the military phonic alphabet (alpha, bravo, etc) when spelling their name in-person.

Audiologists perform hearing tests to assess the threshold of hearing for the seven octaves between 125Hz and 8000Hz. The equivalent audiogram in the case of a telephone call would show severe to profound hearing loss in four of the seven octaves. These limitations were well understood by the lead researcher who lead the voice quality studies at Bell Labs in the 30's. Dr. Harvey Fletcher advocated for a full orthotelephonic response (i.e. capturing the full voice spectrum), but AT&T management balked at the cost of this approach given the state of technology at the time.

Voice communication remains a key input enabling the 70 trillion dollar global economy. It makes no sense to continue suffering a telephone hearing impairment given the wide availability and low cost of high definition (HD) voice alternatives today. There exists no way to reconcile the contradiction of spending millions of dollars on President Obama's transportation options and making him suffer the same telephone hearing disabilities when calling world leaders as

teenagers planning a party. The need to address a telephone hearing

disability arising from 1930's technology limitations is at least 70 years overdue.

I think it was a great event that can be the start of some real activity in this area. On the GIPS Blog you can find a couple of posts on the event. My collague John wrote this peice and I have shared my views in this post. The next similar event is planned for September 15 and 16.

Another great sign that HD Voice is gaining momentum is that at the next ITEXPO conference in Los Angeles on September 1 - 3 there is whole track dedicated to HD Voice.

Last week I was one of the presenters of the webinar entitled "The Potential of HD-Voice: What's All the Noise About?". We had a great audience and got many very interesting questions, some of which we were able to answer during the webinar. However, we did not have a chance to answer a large number of the questions. In the near future I will answer a number of them in this blog.

The first item worth commenting on from the webinar is the results of the poll questions we asked during the webinar. The results are available in the GIPS Blog. I think the result that really stand out is that so few of the peiople that listened to a webinar on HD voice had actually tried it themselves. Maybe a bit counterintuitively, but I believe this is a very good sign for HD voice. What I mean with that is that the concept of high definition voice is garnering that much interest even from people who haven't even experienced it before is a really good sign. Clearly, the momentum is rising.

I will be back soon with more insight from the webinar.

The HD Voice Buzz is Increasing Fast

Wideband voice delivers better voice quality than what we are used to from PSTN and cell phones. It has been around for a long time by now. The first real deployment was the G.722 codec in ISDN networks - mainly for audio conferencing. Because PSTN is inherently narrowband it took until VoIP started gaining interest until the promise of higher voice quality based on wideband voice could be realized. Microsoft, Skype, Google, Yahoo! and others started offering wideband in the first part of this decade. By now the majority of softphones and a growing number of hardware IP phones all support wideband voice.

There is some confusion in the industry around the terms wideband, super wideband, and HD Voice. It seems like HD Voice is gaining some momentum as a marketing term to describe both wideband and super wideband. From a technical viewpoint wideband is a signal that has been sampled at 16 kHz and can contain frequencies up to 8 kHz. Super wideband is associated with the 32 kHz sampling frequency and thus supports frequencies up to 16 kHz. Higher frequency content than 16 kHz is hardly relevant for voice (but for music).

In February, at the ITEXPO in Miami I participated in a panel on HD Voice. From the attendance and interest in asking questions it was clear that this is a topic of interest for a lot of people in the industry. A video of the session is available here. The question we were not able to fully answer was how to get the end users to demand HD Voice. I believe this will be a prominent discussion topic next month when Jeff Pulver gathers industry heavyweights for the HD Communications Summit in New York.

Daniel Berninger wrote a great piece as a guest blogger for the Jeff Pulver Blog about the importance of HD voice in the face of increasing adoption of text communication. He writes, "High Definition (HD) voice can do for the voice industry what it did for the video industry in triggering the replacement cycle that follows format changes."

In an effort to address the most common questions about HD voice, GIPS this week published a whitepaper on the topic. Make sure to check the GIPS in Action page to download the whitepaper, and to hear the difference between traditional speech and HD voice.

I will end with a shameless plug for our Light Reading webinar on May 5 entitled "The Potential of HD-Voice: What's All the Noise About?"

All this buzz makes me pretty sure that in a short period of time HD Voice will be the norm rather than the exception in terms of communication quality.

Video Streaming vs. Video Conferencing

Despite uncertain economic times, there are signs of life for the VoIP and video over IP markets, as well as interesting applications popping up this week. As we noted on the GIPS blog, the market for videoconferencing in China is expected to grow at over 16 % this year, and the broadband infrastructure plans in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 should hopefully mean more capacity for advanced IP communications.

In addition, something that really caught my eye was the quality of the video stream for CBS' live online coverage of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. I recommend checking it out as I think the video is pretty impressive. They are using the Microsoft Silverlight plugin . John Hermansen brings up the topic of the differences in streaming and real-time video and why Microsoft/CBS is able to get such high quality.

The main difference between streaming video and real-time video conferencing is noticed when you start watching a streamed video segment (live or recorded). It doesn't start immediately. The reason is of course that video is being buffered to facilitate good quality. This buffering delay, that is typically tens of seconds long, allows for handling many of the major challenges of video over IP. Naturally, by having a buffer there will be time for retransmission of lost packets, something that can rarely be done in a video conferencing scenario. The long buffer also ensures that the network jitter (variations in transport time for IP packets) will not cause any quality issues. These two effects of buffering are well known by most people in the industry. However, there are some other less known benefits of high buffer latency that can be very helpful in terms of delivering high quality media.

One of the major issues in video transmission is to manage the bitrate of the media to utilize the bandwidth available. If too high bitrate is used, there will be freezes in the picture and delay will keep building up even more. If, on the other hand, a lesser bitrate than the available bandwidth is used the best possible quality will not be delivered. The long buffers in streaming makes it easier to adapt to the available bandwidth since there is more room for error and adaptations don't need to be as quick as for realtime video conferencing. An additional problem with the two-way nature of a video conference is that typically both sides will be limited by its uplink speed, which typically is an order of magnitude lower than the downlink speed. In streaming scenarios there is only video going in the downlink direction.

Another important factor of video quality is that the audio and video are synchronized in time. This is also a much easier problem to solve if significant buffer delay is available to adjust the timing for the audio or video stream.

Lastly, I want to mention one of the least well known benefits of long delay. Namely, the effect of long delay on the bitrate of the video (and audio) compression. Since audio and video are data sources that both are highly correlated between adjacent points in time, more efficient compression can be achieved if a longer portion of the signal is considered at each coding instance. For realtime communication coding is typically happening every 20 ms to 60 ms while in streaming it is possible to consider up to several seconds of signal at each coding instance. The corresponding gain in compression efficiency is very significant and results in better quality for the same available bandwidth.

Java Based VoIP

Java offers a great way to build multiplatform applications. However, this is not necessarily true when it comes to complex processing such as VoIP application.

The first thing that comes to mind is how to create a download free VoIP application using java script. This is unfortunately not possible. The only way to create a download free VoIP app is to use Flash Player or another application that typically has already been downloaded on the computer.

It is, however, possible to write a complete VoIP application in Java using the Java Media Framework but such a solution will require a download before usage. The advantage over native applications is that the same application can be used on several platforms (e.g., Windows, Mac, and Linux). The limitation here is that powerful machines are needed to run the application, effectively removing the mobile platforms as targets for Java based VoIP applications.

So, what is the best way to utilize Java for building a VoIP client. I believe the answer is to build the GUI and the actual application in Java and then call a native C++ library that takes care of the VoIP processing. It turns out that integrating a native C++ library into a Java application is very straightforward.
If the VoIP library, as in the case of GIPS' VoiceEngine is available on multiple platforms with the same API a very efficient and high quality multiplatform solution can easily be obtained by just replacing the C++ library for each platform. All the Java code can be the same.

In summary, Java is a great tool for multiplatform application development but Java in itself does not offer a sufficient solution for building a multiplatform VoIP application. This is obviously even more apparent for video where even higher processing load is the norm.

Musings from ITEXPO East

I really enjoyed myself at the ITEXPO last week in Miami. Even though the locals complained about how unusually cold it was, I have a problem complaining when it is 68 degrees and sunny...

At the show, one of the first things that happened was that several people asked me about the Apple patent on video conferencing on the iPhone. At the time I hadn't seen anything about it but after a quick look at the patent it was clear to me that the patent only covers touch screen capabilities. I.e., there is nothing in the actual patent claims about video conferencing. I provide a few more details in a post on the GIPS blog.

On the first day of the conference I was part of a panel discussion with the title "Collaboration & Telepresence as Part of a UC Strategy". The session was well attended and several interesting discussion topics were brought up by the moderator and the audience. There was a clear consensus that the ROI of video conferencing and telepresence is easy to calculate and that most companies will see those returns within 12 -18 months. One part of the discussion I found particularly interesting was related to the the less tangible benefits of video conferencing and collaboration. In addition to pure ROI in terms of reduced travel cost the less tangible benefits include increased efficiency. The questions that were asked were how do you measure such gains and how do you put it into the ROI calculations before making the investment in a new solution? Unfortunately, it seems like this is really hard and nobody had a great answer to those questions. However, as pointed out by the panel, since the ROI on travel cost alone looks very attractive these additional benefits don't have to be included in the initial ROI calculation.

On Tuesday I participated in a very interesting lunch panel. The topic wideband (or HD) voice and the session was entitled "HD - What's the noise and are we ready?" Look out for a video of the panel that will soon be available on TMC's site. This is a topic I am very passionate about. GIPS has been a strong advocate and may I say a trailblazer in terms of deployments of wideband speech solutions. Hundreds of millions of users are currently using GIPS' iSAC, the most used wideband codec in the world. The success of wideband for desktop solutions is very obvious but the main question raised was related to how and when will HD voice be on our regular phones and mobile phones? More specifically someone asked: When will 50 % of the cell phones have HD voice? Everybody were reluctant to make any bold predictions but someone on the panel answered ten years. I not only hope, I am pretty sure it will be much shorter than that. I predict that Europe and North America will be there in less than five years. Another key questions raised was: How can we get users to demand HD voice? The answer is in my opinion found in the expression "hearing is believing". If you experience true HD voice you never want to go back to PSTN quality again. Some concerns regarding the number of wideband codecs available and interoperability issues were also brought up. Considering that the number of available wideband codecs is significantly less than the narrowband codecs I am not worried about this issue at all. There is a need for several codecs for different usage scenarios and only the appropriate codecs will survive.

My last presentation was on the topic of VoIP enabling the iPhone. Clearly this is a topic that interests a lot of people and I got a lot of interesting feedback. In short my message was that high quality VoIP exists for the iPhone today but a few challenges remain. The main ones being the lack of support for running applications in the background and the fact that VoIP over 3G is not allowed.

A pretty clear theme throughout the conference and the show was SIP trunking and more specifically interoperability (see SIPconnect) of SIP solutions. SIP trunking is obviously nothing new but it is pretty clear that the vendors and (a few) service providers are trying very hard to get this technology deployed. In my opinion, few things in this industry makes more sense than removing the enterprise PSTN gateways and replacing them with SIP trunking gateways. It has always troubled me that the vast majority of VoIP implementations in the enterprise are terminated directly to the PSTN already at the enterprise itself. Unnecessary transcoding and delay are just some of the issues. Stay tuned for more on this topic in a future post.

Practical Concerns in Acoustic Echo Control for PC

Echo control differs from many other audio processing tasks in that it depends on two streams: the farend (audio to be played on the speaker) and the nearend (audio recorded from the microphone). In a hands-free call, the nearend typically contains an echoed version of the farend. In order to identify and remove this echo component from the stream, the signals must be time-aligned in some fashion. It is this need for time-alignment that is at the root of many of the practical difficulties in acoustic echo control (AEC) that are not apparent for other tasks such as noise suppression and coding which operate on only a single stream.

There are two crucial and sometimes unmentioned factors which contribute to this time-alignment problem for AEC on a PC platform:

1. The AEC will be running on a non-real-time operating system. This means that processing is not guaranteed to take place at any particular time, but will instead be performed in some kind of best-effort manner. The effect is that the delay between the farend and nearend signals is unknown a priori and will probably change over time. When the CPU is heavily loaded this is aggravated; it's even possible that buffers will overflow and we'll lose some of the stream data. It's necessary to compensate for this delay to achieve our desired time-alignment.

2. There is a wide array of available hardware devices which can be used in combination. Recording and playout devices (often soundcards, but alternately webcams and other USB devices) run on hardware clocks just as the CPU does. This controls the rate at which data is recorded or played out. If these clocks differ, and data is recorded at a different rate than it is played out, the farend and nearend streams will drift away from each other. This phenomenon is aptly labeled clock drift. Again, it's necessary to compensate for this effect to achieve time-alignment.

The wide variety of hardware leads to another issue. In any practical scenario there will be some amount of non-linear distortion in the echo path. Poor or overdriven speakers and microphones are usually the cause. This type of distortion can be heard for instance if a user speaks very loudly into the microphone, causing signal saturation. The traditional echo canceller uses a linear filter to remove echo, which by definition cannot model this distortion. An effective algorithm must be prepared for this eventuality.

In the literature these practical considerations are sometimes not given their due weight. An AEC algorithm that performs well "in the lab" can be surprisingly underwhelming in a real scenario. It is therefore important that we use actual field recordings including time-alignment mismatches to test performance.

GIPS relies on an integration between our AEC algorithm and VoiceEngine's cross-platform sound device handling to effectively contend with these practical considerations.

Verizon Hub Unifies Home and Mobile Services

In his recent GIPS blog posting, John Hermansen astutely commented that companies like Verizon must continue to innovate and provide customers with telecommunication services that offer greater value when compared to what is available today. This is the only way to combat the migration of customers to other providers such as Vonage and Comcast or abandoning of landlines all together. John concludes his blog with "I know I would be much more likely to sign up for FiOS if they offered PC-based video calling, integrated VoIP and TV applications or a combined mobile and home service. Hopefully this is Verizon's strategy, as it will benefit VoIP developers and consumers alike."

On Friday, Verizon took a big step towards gaining John as a customer by bringing a new value-added service to the market with the introduction of the Verizon Hub.

Surprisingly, this new option for landline service is coming for a wireless company. The Verizon Hub is being marketed to Verizon Wireless customers and is being targeted at families with active lifestyles. The multifunctional Hub utilizes existing broadband service from any carrier and integrates the services one would expect from a voice-based device with a host of new services, including unlimited SMS, real-time traffic, weather, calendars, directions, movie trailers, etc. If Verizon can successfully bridge the gap between its mobile and fixed offerings, services such as VCast will have higher utility driving greater adoption. If successful, Verizon will increase the ARPU of its traditional wireless customers, add a new revenue stream with landline service and maybe, more importantly, capture market share in regions that it currently does not offer a land line service.

Another intriguing characteristic in the Verizon press release is that they do not once mention Voice over IP. To me, this indicates a welcome departure in how Voice over IP is marketed. To Verizon and their customers Voice is simply Voice. With this announcement, we find a major telecommunications company leveraging the ability to deliver voice over an IP network to expand on their product offering and bringing greater value to their customers.

Don't Count the Pixels...Look at the Quality

Today consumers are looking for more pixels- more pixels in digital cameras, more pixels in cell phones and more pixels in webcams. The perception is that more pixels result in better quality. This approach neglects the importance of framerate and response to lighting, which can be more problematic for webcams than camcorders.

Take the typical high-end webcam. It can capture a 1280*1024 HD video stream at roughly 1.3 Mega pixels per frame. However, what the manufacturer won't tell you is that the webcam can only capture 7 frames per second, if you are lucky (in my experience it's closer to 5). The result is not a video, but a slideshow.

So if even high-end webcams can't produce a high-definition video experience, what are your options? Buy a camcorder. Even an inexpensive camcorder has better optics than the best webcams, and it will not require a 100 watt lamp to get an acceptable frame-rate. The camcorder can be connected to your computer using a firewire, and will produce a close to TV-quality video stream. As usual, the more you pay the better quality you get. But inexpensive camcorders are quite sufficient for most desktop video scenarios.

You can find a reasonably priced camcorder that connects to your computer for as low as $200. However, if you plan to use your camcorder for more than video conferencing, you might consider investing in a higher end camcorder that provides more features.

With offices all over the world, we at GIPS use our own video solutions as much as possible for internal meetings. If you have tried the Cisco Telepresence solution, you know that video conferencing can be great. But with the enormous cost to set up such meeting rooms, many of us are still hesitating. Our focus at GIPS is video processing software, but it is important to realize that hardware plays a big role in the end-user experience. After testing all kinds of equipment at a variety of price points, we have settled on a hardware solution that we think is good enough to make video conferencing an amazing experience. By running our VideoEngine demo software with the following setup, we are able to approximate a telepresence experience at a much lower cost.

PC

Any standard PC with a decent quad core processor will do. With that kind of processing power, you can go all the way up to full-HD video coding. The key is to keep this PC dedicated to the meeting software only. It's easy to think that you can re-use a lab/demo/test/presentation machine - but that means that the PC will never be ready when you need it. Trust me, we have tried...

Cost: $1000

Camera

USB web cams are getting better and better, but they are still not sophisticated enough to be able to shoot a whole meeting room with several participants. One big problem is that the frame rate drops as soon as the lighting is not ideal. In addition, it is nice to have a true optical zoom function, and the ability to fit the camera on a real tripod. We have found that a standard consumer grade HDV camera gives you the best result for limited money. Have a look at for example Canon HV30 or Sony HDR-HC9.

Cost: $800

Displaying the video

Here you have two options: either re-use the projector that you probably already have in your meeting room, or buy a dedicated LCD-TV. Bigger is better. For the projector option, make sure you can find a lighting level in the room that's OK for both the camera and looking at the screen.

Cost: 0-$2000

Additional items

HDMI capture card $250

High quality conference microphone $500

Monitor speaker: $200

Your total bill will end up at $3000-$5000 per meeting room. Feel like spending more? Have a look at the Sony EVI-HD1 camera. The camera alone will set you back 5K, but the video quality is amazing - and you get a nifty remote control for zooming and panning.

Right around this time every year, many commentators and captains of industry usually announce their predictions for the new year. I do not plan to do that. If I did, it would be like market research: the only thing you know about the predictions is that they are wrong. This is not to say that looking forward (or market research) is useless. By looking ahead and anticipating where the market is headed, one can get a sense of direction. It is with this in mind that I want to mention some interesting areas to watch in our industry and comment a little on GIPS in 2009.

The mobile world, and especially mobile IP communications, will be very interesting to follow in 2009 (by mobile I mean the cell phone based wireless systems). Hopefully, we will see innovative new IP communication apps moving beyond wireless email. Maybe we will even see the first apps that include real time IP video. Both the mobile world and the IP communications industry will benefit from new mobile IP communications apps providing value to end users.

In addition, I think video conferencing will continue to gain popularity. Look for further fragmentation of the space with new, less expensive, easier to use systems and services in addition to the current meeting room dedicated hardware based systems. Desktop solutions that utilize backend software running on standard servers will continue to present a flexible alternative, and should proliferate as the UC market grows.

Speaking of which, 2009 could be a big year for Unified Communications. I have even noticed the term "mobile UC" popping up, indicating that Fixed Mobile Convergence is becoming a feature of UC. This could be an exciting development, as it would provide a new venue for features and functions that have only been available on the desktop until now.

As the VP of Engineering for GIPS, I am excited about our focus on innovation. Look for us to innovate in several dimensions: basic voice, video and multimedia technology for IP communications, as well as in our system level engine offerings. We are looking forward to providing our customers with more and better technology that enables them to create innovative high class offerings!
