651 Million Use Email -- Traffic 76.8B Messages/Day

Following are some tidbits I received today from Radicati Market Stats, a technology research firm:

EMAIL

+ Worldwide e-mail traffic increased by 35% in 2004, totaling 76.8 billion messages per day. Corporate e-mails accounted for 83% of this traffic.

+ The number of e-mail users worldwide increased by 15%, to 651 million users in 2004.

+ We expect the market for hosted and managed email services to reach 59 million accounts in 2008, up from 39 million today.

+ We expect ISP/Webmail accounts to reach 973 million mailboxes in 2008, up from 690 million in 2004.


DIRECTORY

+ We estimate the total market for directories to grow from $563 million in 2004 to $1,497 million by 2008.


ISP

+ We expect ISP revenue to grow from €40.9B in 2004, to €52.5B in 2008. Of this revenue, the proportion generated by consumer ISPs is set to increase slightly, from 41% in 2004, to 46% in 2008.

+ Consumer ISPs currently serve around 135M customers throughout Europe. By 2008, we expect the total European installed base to increase to 193M accounts, representing an average yearly growth rate of 9.4%.

WIRELESS

+ We estimate that employees using wireless email will have put in an extra 95 minutes of work per day each by year-end 2008, up from an extra 60 minutes in 2004.

+ By year-end 2004, mobile professionals will make up 17% of worldwide corporate professionals. We expect this to grow to 89% of worldwide corporate professionals by 2008.

+ The market for Wireless Email is expected to grow to $1,158 million by year-end 2008, an increase from its year-end 2004 worldwide market value of $231 million.
