Voxbone adds South Africa

June 9, 2010 3:58 AM

There are so many amazing changes about to happen in Africa. The entire Continent is going to change in the next 3-5 years.

The network building activity is covered in the Dark Fiber Community blog. The subsea and terrestrial fiber networks being built all over Africa are bringing real positive change to the economies, health care, education and standard of living for the countries within the Continent.

If you did not believe multi-lateral VoIP Peering was real it is time to get real - even South Africa has a multi-lateral VoIP Peering platform! Thanks to XConnect and Multisource this developing market on a quickly developing continent now has a very useful tool to deal with the growth of VoIP and related applications.

From their announcement The IP-Peering Federation will:

"..establish a multilateral peering federation, which will offer operators advanced VoIP and next-generation network (NGN) peering capabilities via an in-country interconnection hub.

Raising Capital For Your VoIP Company

February 14, 2010 3:42 PM

On Feb 9th, 2010 I participated on a panel titled "Raising Venture Capital in a Difficult Market" at an Atlanta Telecom Professionals event in Atlanta, GA. The panelists included Gordon Rogers of Atlanta Technology Angels and Alan Urech of Stoney River Capital.

The ATP always puts on great events and Atlanta is a terrific market for technology development and raising capital for ideas that turn in to products and successful businesses. The culture there is of a breeding ground for innovation.

XConnect Revenue Doubled in 2009

February 3, 2010 7:06 PM

XConnect will announce tomorrow that their revenue doubled in 2009. This is great news and yet another positive sign that there is growth in VoIP Peering. Whether it is private peered traffic, or through a VoIP Peering service provider such as XConnect there is certainly a shift happening. The use of services such as XConnect obviously makes it easier to gauge the trend.

AT&T declared the PSTN and POTS a relic of the past in this announcement and asked the FCC for a timeline to shut-down.

This is ironic for several reasons

1. In the 2003 Triennial Review the FCC gave the RBOC's Broadband Relief in return for allowing the CLEC's to still have access to UNE.

Gizmo5 Acquired by Google

December 12, 2009 8:56 PM

It is official, Google has acquired Gizmo5. Read the statement

This is a follow up on my last blog about this topic.

I actually met Wesley Chan, Google Group Product Manager for Voice, in Washington D.C. Thursday Dec 10th, 2009 while we were attending the FCC Chairman's dinner hosted by the FCBA. That was an interesting and very well-attended event.

It will be also quite interesting to see how Google integrates Gizmo in to Google Voice, or otherwise.

Pathfinder Needs to Find a New Way

November 22, 2009 4:24 PM

In a recent blog post from Jim Dalton on the TransNexus website, Jim discusses Pathfinder, which is the GMSA's new number portability database service managed by Neustar. I find this to be a very important piece of the VoIP Peering puzzle and an increasingly complicated one as we shift from fixed-lined PSTN to fixed-line broadband IP as well as deal with the entirely new universe of mobile voice and portability within and between each.

I do like ENUM of course, but really believe in the long run endpoints will be resolved to SRV records. Not only will that sever the last link to the PSTN from a number perspective, but also as it seems the last link to the PSTN billing models and philosophies.

November 16, 2009 12:25 AM

Gizmoogle

November 9, 2009 10:04 PM

In what could be an interesting move towards a vastly expanded VoIP offering, yet a more FCC regulated, Google it has been reported by TechCrunch that the search giant has purchased Gizmo5.

I wrote an article about the Gizmo Project back in November 2007. It seems that they have come along since.

Google has not officially announced anything about this deal yet, so we shall see if it is real, or just VoIP deal chatter.

AT&T Sees the VoIP

October 7, 2009 7:22 PM

In a "reversal" AT&T said that it will now allow VoIP apps to run on their network using the iPhone.

Smart move. Given that they are getting increasing customer complaints about poor service and coverage for their 3G network driven by cusrtomers actually wanting to use the data service it makes sense for them to conceed the voice business to the data side of the network to keep people happy.

The truth is that voice will not create huge congestion on the data network since full duplex VoIP is 90kbps or so.

Crescent Point Group of Singapore was joined by return backers Accel Partners, Grazia Equity and Venrock. The company previously raised $12 million in 2007."

I just spoke with Eli Katz, XConnect CEO and founder about the news and a few other things related to the VoIP Peering business and as usual he is spot on.

DealCenter at ITEXPO West 2009

July 22, 2009 9:44 PM

The DealCenter marches forward as it takes on yet another major telecom industry conference. This time it is none other than the ITEXPO!

This is very cool as it makes the entire conference experience more valuable. By being able to set up one-on-one meetings with prospective buyers/sellers before you go to the conference you can justify your trip and raise the probability of a successful outting rather than just a chance meeting at a booth.

I encourage everyone attending ITEXPO to use the DealCenter as a way to meet new people and manage your time more efficiently.

These topics are on a lot of minds today and that is a great thing for all of us in this industry. I am going to be moderating/leading two sessions at the IT EXPO West 2009 in LA.

Spread the word! I hope to see everyone there!
