August 2006 Archives

Apparently, the word hasn't spread as far and wide as I had hoped, as a number of people I've spoken with recently weren't aware that the upcoming VoIP Demo and IP Communications Business Summit events have been rescheduled and moved venues.

Originally slated for this week in Santa Clara, the events are now proudly co-located with the Internet Telephony Conference and EXPO West, at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, CA, October 10-13, 2006.

This is exciting on a number of levels, including the fact that the October timeframe is far better from a show schedule perspective than mid-summer, and also the events will be in a prime position to serve an even greater attendee base, as upwards of 9,000 IP communications-interested attendees are expected to converge on the convention center.

For more information about the agenda, visit the VoIP Demo show site here. Continue Reading...

My Son is 91

August 8, 2006 1:11 PM

Enterprising young teens (including my own son) eager to join in the Myspace.com festivities, have easily found a gaping loophole in the site's security measures: Although kids under 14 are "not allowed" to publish profiles, it seems that all an enterprising youngster needs to do in order to circumvent this restriction is to enter his age as something north of that demarcation point.

As a result, there are more than 3,000 91 year-old kids that have set up house on Myspace. And lord knows how many kids have registered under other inflated ages! Clearly, something needs to be done to correct this completely inadequate security arrangement. In my opinion, all children should be required to register on Myspace and other social networking sites only with the implicit consent of their parents or authorized adult guardian -- in an arrangement somewhat akin to co-signing for membership.

I know this position might be considered extreme by some, but I've heard my share of some fairly unsettling stories and ancedotes about unsavory characters trolling the waters of Myspace sending all kinds of inappropriate messages and photos to underage kids that managed to sneak under the rope and aren't old enough to know how to handle it (or savvy enough to know how to protect themselves online, such as making their profile private rather than public and therefore accessible by anyone trolling the site, or omitting all manner of personally identifiable information.)

As a concerned parent, I'm not interested in preventing my son from discovering the wonders of the Web, but I am keenly interested in making sure he is safe and sound when he is online. Continue Reading...

SIPconnect Embraced By The SIP Forum

August 8, 2006 11:49 AM

First off, I'm glad to be back -- (in case you didn't notice, I took a break from blogging this past month due to travel, vacation, family matters and work projects) -- and I'm feeling reinvigorated and ready to get back into the thick of things.

The practice of direct IP Peering between SIP-enabled IP PBXs and SIP-enabled VoIP Service Providers, or more commonly referred to as "SIP Trunking", is continuing to gain traction in the marketplace.

Of recent interest in this vein, and something that will surely give SIP trunking brand new respect, is the coming announcement that the SIP Forum has formally embraced the SIPconnect Interface Specification.

The SIPconnect Interface Specification -- now organized and maintained by the SIP Forum -- defines a methodology for enabling direct peering between a SIP-enabled Service Provider network and a SIP-enabled Enterprise Network. SIPconnect specifies a reference architecture, a minimal set of IETF and ITU-T standards that must be supported, provides precise guidance in the areas where the standards leave multiple implementation options, and specifies a minimal set of capabilities that should be supported by the Service Provider and Enterprise networks.
