Takeout Becomes the New Normal: 75% of U.S. Restaurant Traffic Now Off-Premises

Takeout Transforms from Convenience to Cultural Staple in 2025

In 2025, takeout has evolved from a mere convenience to an integral part of American dining culture. According to the National Restaurant Association’s latest report, off-premises dining—including takeout, drive-thru, and delivery—now accounts for 75% of all restaurant traffic .

Generational Shifts Drive Takeout Popularity

Younger generations, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, are at the forefront of this shift. The report highlights that 67% of Gen Z adults consider takeout or drive-thru meals essential to their lifestyle. Moreover, 60% of Gen Z and Millennials have increased their takeout frequency over the past year .

Speed and Value: Key Consumer Priorities

Speed remains a critical factor, with nearly 95% of consumers emphasizing its importance in their takeout experience. Value is also paramount; however, it’s not solely about price. Consumers assess value based on food quality, portion size, and overall satisfaction. Promotional deals and loyalty programs significantly influence dining decisions, with 80% of consumers utilizing offers like “Buy One, Get One Free” .

Technology Enhances the Takeout Experience

Technological advancements are reshaping the takeout landscape. Approximately 50% of Gen Z adults and 52% of Millennials express openness to using AI-powered assistants for ordering. Mobile ordering has become mainstream, with 57% of adults using it recently, including 74% of Millennials and 65% of Gen Z adults .

Restaurants Adapt to Off-Premises Demand

In response to these trends, restaurants are adapting their operations. Limited-service operators are increasingly offering delivery, with many expecting curbside and dedicated takeout areas to become more common. Full-service restaurants are also exploring off-premises options, anticipating growth in curbside pickup and dedicated takeout counters .

Conclusion

The transformation of takeout from a convenience to a cultural norm reflects broader changes in consumer behavior and expectations. As off-premises dining continues to dominate, restaurants must innovate and adapt to meet the evolving demands of their customers.
