Big tech companies have disintermediated the advertisers and the eyeballs.<\/p>\n<p>The Democrats in the House of Representatives have <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/377207-house-dem-wants-to-let-news-industry-organize-against-tech-platforms\">gotten involved<\/a> and&nbsp;<span data-mce-mark=\"1\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">introduced a bill today that would allow media outlets to band together to negotiate for better terms with giant tech platforms.<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">Rep.&nbsp;<span data-mce-mark=\"1\"><a class=\"rollover-people-link\" href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/david-cicilline\" data-nid=\"186584\">David Cicilline<\/a><\/span>&#8216;s (D-R.I.)&nbsp;<\/span><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">Journalism Competition and Preservation Act would grant a temporary antitrust waiver for news publishers to collectively negotiate with companies like Facebook and Google.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">&#8220;Our democracy is strongest when we have a free, open press that informs citizens, holds public officials accountable, and roots out corruption,&#8221; Cicilline, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary antitrust subcommittee, said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">&ldquo;This bill empowers local newspapers to negotiate collectively with the biggest technology platforms to ensure consumers have access to the best journalism possible.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">The News Media Alliance (NMA), a trade group representing hundreds of large and small outlets, has been pushing for such legislation. Last year, the group&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/341256-news-outlets-want-congress-to-allow-collective-negotiations-with-facebook\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">urged Congress to grant a waiver<\/span><\/a><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">&nbsp;to the industry, arguing that tech giants have been squeezing them out of&nbsp;coveted ad dollars.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"blogs-social-wrp\">\n<div class=\"share\"><a class=\"email\" href=\"mailto:?subject=TheHill.com%3A%20House%20Dem%20wants%20to%20let%20news%20industry%20organize%20against%20tech%20platforms&#038;body=From%20TheHill.com%3A%20%0A%0A%0A%0Ahttp%3A\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/377207-house-dem-wants-to-let-news-industry-organize-against-tech-platforms\">&nbsp;<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"column\">\n<div class=\"content-img-wrp\">\n<div class=\"content-img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/thumb_small_article\/public\/cicillinedavid_110415gn_lead.jpg?itok=qyvD3Muo\" alt=\"House Dem wants to let news industry organize against tech platforms\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"credits\">&copy; Greg Nash<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-with-sidebar-wrp\">\n<div class=\"content-wrp\">\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>&#8220;We are grateful to Congressman Cicilline for his commitment to ensuring fair competition with the platforms and for his work to preserve quality journalism,&rdquo; David Chavern, NMA&rsquo;s CEO, said in a statement Wednesday. &ldquo;Our industry depends on our ability to continue to invest in stories that report the truth and hold our public officials accountable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, News Corp chairman Rupert Murdoch urged the tech giants to start paying outlets carriage fees for delivering their content.<\/p>\n<p>This is a nonpartisan issue. Both parties have realized the tech giants have amassed too much power and are the censors of what their constituents can see.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The idea is to bring collective bargaining to the news producers in order to protect them from having their information &#8220;legally stolen&#8221; and used by Big Tech competitors to make money. Many argue there is no doubt that Facebook represents a monopoly in social media and Google in search.
